Lake Superior Winter Splendor: Part TWO

This is the second of a series of photos I took on the shores of Lake Superior...if you missed Part ONE, just drop below this post and you will find it there!

I am always mesmerized by ice formations, especially near open water in the winter.

I wasn't disappointed on this trip out to the big lake.

This is a snow covered little island just off the shore. I loved the "dripping" ice formations on the edge of the island:

Snow fingers with ice! Looks like winter lava:

One of the most photographed places on Marquette's Lake Superior shoreline is this red coast guard station:

But in the winter, even the simple frozen shoreline can be gorgeous:

Close up, the shelves of ice have a character all of their own:

These looked like icy fingers dipping into chocolate pudding:

This is a closeup of the one I showed you yesterday of the frozen "hat" over the large stone in the lake:

Looking through lacy trees out at the frozen island just off shore:

Molten ICE!:

A close up of an ice "cave" on the island:

I have one more blogpost to show you tomorrow
to conclude the photographs of beautiful Lake Superior
in the winter....
(at least for this week!)

Who knows what I might find next week????

Just recently saw two DVDs featuring extreme winter weather... and think they should have hired you as your photos are much better than theirs!

Joan, I hate to be repetitive, but, once again, you've got some beautiful photographs! We are expecting 14" of snow, but we've got none of that spectacular ice!

Brian: Whenever you are ready to come up just let me know---there are so many nice camping sights and lakes,etc...we would love to be your tour guide.

Gaston: Why thanks! that is the nicest thing to say!

Lynn: 14 inches? Wow, that is more than we are getting way up north here!

Up here in the Pacific Northwest we just finished the warmest January on record, and the Winter Olympics are next week! I hope all turns out well, they should have had them in the U.P., eh? Great pictures, as usual.

I'd comment, but I have to go turn the heat up now; for some reason I seem to be shivering and cold!

Ice, snow, snowsqualls, we have it all, like Lake Superior, just smaller, except for the depth of snow!
Great shots.

O.M.G....Joan! What a contrast to your recent Florida pictures - not to long time ago posted, right? :)

Winter looks beautiful for sure - in the picture. I don't know if I could stand that cold anymore. I have not even warm shoes left...*smile*...

Great shot!

I have to admit I don't think I have ever seen ice like that next to water! Loving the ice formations and that pic with the lacy tree! Wonderful as always!

I showed my hubby the icy photos and we both like the Coast Guard station (his father was in the Coast Guard).
Great shot of the ice cave and molten ice!!

These are wonderful pics. I live Upper Michigan; about an hour south of Lake Superior and about an hour west of Lake Michigan. Since moving down from Alaska 5 years ago we've only seen the lakes in the summer months. However; these are great pics and we may have to venture out in the winter. Thanks for sharing.

strange how they make such unusual formations by just melting a little.

DJan: We DO have an Olympic training center here at NMU! You can see why, right?

Eva: Wimp!

Jenn: Thanks, I am glad you liked them.

Susanne: I hear you! I am waiting to come back down to Florida in April, when my grandbaby is due there!

Bernie: you are such a Sweetie!

Betsy: there are two lighthouses nearby but not right next to the red coast guard station...I will try and get some winter lighthouses before spring, if I can.

RNSane: I would love to see SF some day too!

Insanity: So glad you liked them! I loved being out there taking them too.

TechnoBabe: Thanks...glad your hubby liked them too!

Cher: Oh, what town in the U.P. do you live in? Newberry? I live west of Marquette!

Grannyann: I just love how the waves make cool ice formations...they change every other day,I swear!

Shelly: Maybe we can do that someday...how fun would THAT be???

I like your description of this. It all really does look like some sort of frozen lava.

I grew up on Lake Erie in Ohio. Your wonderful pictures reminded me of just how COLD it gets back there.

You have a great eye!

Happy weekend.
