Today, we are back to winter photos!
And one of the favorite activities I do, is to attend the U.P. 200 Dog Sled Races
held in Marquette, Michigan.
Today, I am sharing these photos (Part One)
of this year's race.
They haul in snow and run the track
smack down the center of the downtown streets:
A shot of the announcer's box:
(The lady in red at the podium just got back from the Iditarod in Alaska
and she also went to Antarctica to experience Condition Zero..she is a fantastic speaker).
Getting the dogs ready:
(the blue marks on their sides means these dogs have been examined by the Vet. and are ok to run the race).
Fantastic Sled!:
Checking out the dog's paws.
They must be healthy prior to and during the race and they make them wear doggie booties:
Official race clock.
They left at 7:10p on the dot!:
I LOVED this shot.
It was like the dog was dreaming of winning the upcoming race:
I bet you thought all dog sled races were run with Husky dogs, didn't you?
We only saw a few of that breed when we were there.
But if I were a FEMALE sled dog????
You can bet your wagging tail
that
I'd be after
THIS GUY!!!!:
Stay tuned to my blog,
I will be doing Part TWO
of these wonderful races next!

Such gorgeous creatures. I'm glad to know thata their well being is taken into such strict consideration.
What beautiful looking dogs. I bet it wasn't just the sight of the spectacle - but also the sound of it which was memorable.
love it, and so glad to know they check the dogs out with a vet. beautiful shots. have you been to Picture Impefect check out her sled race shots. she is on my side bar, Krista lives in the Yukon, she made somekind of flip charts of the photos she made. http://phototreks.blogspot.com/ i love all things dogs
So beautiful! I love pooches!!
And I agree that lovely boy would certainly elicit some tail wagging! ;)
I'm not sure but I think the non huskys are referred to as Alaskan huskies. We use to have mushers stay at our campground in the winter for the races in Newberry and we were told those are called Alaskan huskies...hmmmm, don't get it but whatever.
What fun! Great shots, too.
I'm glad it's only part 1 because we had Alaskan Malamutes for years and got interested in races, backpacking, weight pulls, etc. What fun!
We used to go to the Yukon Quest when we lived in North Pole, Alaska. Miss it! Maybe next year we'll have to catch the Marquette races.
'hugs from afar'
These dogs seem eager to get going.
Some of the dogs look like they are mixed with Husky and or Alaskan Malmute ! My cousin bred Husky's for years up north. It is quite a site to see these sled dogs in action. Great photos. Have a good day !
Great post. I would love to be able to witness one of these.
Oh how neat, Joan. I think I remember you posting about this event last year... (OR--someone on my blog list did it.) I'd love to see one of those races sometime... That is just so neat!!!! Can't wait to see more.
Hugs,
Betsy
Awwww, the puppies were so cute! I just love dogs. I agree, it was great they they were checked over by a vet before & during the race. And yes, ol' Blue Eyes certainly was a handsome boy! Great photos, Joan, thanks!
How exciting you get to see a sled dog race, I miss the Iditarod. It is a little strange however to see dogs other than huskies racing. In Alaska our Alaskan huskies were real huskies.
Great scenes from the race..I enjoyed them:)
The dogs are all so beautiful. It has to be a lot of fun and excitement to see all this going on at the same time.
