Continuing on with the fabulous architectured headstones
Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia.
The statues and headstones were simply amazing.
Look at the shape of this little mausoleum....like a pyramid or Silo!:
I fell in love with this headstone. According to the history of the headstone, the woman who died had a lifesized statue made of her by her family for her headstone...three-dimensional. It as just amazing:
The detail was atonishing!:
It was so beautiful:
Look at the detail of her hair and the view from behind her.
She has been sitting on her headstone for a long time, looking out at the beautiful views
of this gorgeous cemetery:
Sunlight on her face.
I wondered if the family strategically placed her statue in that position?:
She was a beautiful woman in life and remains so in death with this statue:
Here is another one where the deceased has a statue of her likeness made and put
on her headstone. Look how sad she looks!:
It was more like an art museum than a cemetery. I wished I had more time there:
I am almost done with my series on Bonaventure Cemetery.
I hope you haven't found them too inappropriate, but I truly think
they are gorgeous headstones full of history and art.
Beautiful photos, Joan. I never get tired of your photos... That one sculpture of the lady sitting is incredible. WOW!!! Thanks again for sharing.
Wow those are some amazing headstones and the mausoleum is stunning! Thanks for sharing!!
i think i know where i want to be buried now...this place was such a cool find...i rather like the silo at the top...
Beautiful works of art!
Blogger keeps saying I'm anonymous, but I'm really Eva from Wrestling With Retirement.
These are art and so lovely. Wouldn't you love to have such a headstone?
i am so frustrated. this morning at 7 am i logged on and came to your blog first thing to see what you would post, i typed not 1 but 2 long commeents and it would NOT let me post, kept throwing me out. the phone rang, i was on it for 2 hours, we watched american idol and here i am, and hope this goes through. i can't remember what i said now. these are fantastic and you found 3 i don't remember. i was there without a camera so would see with a different EYE now. you have really captured the ART in the place and made some special photos.
I just love these! The statue of the woman is just stunning!
Those statues remind me of ones seen in the Louvre. Hard to imagine commissioning one for my own grave, though.
They are gorgeous.
Incredible works of art.
The statues really are wonderful. You were in photographer's heaven, I think.
I have really enjoyed this tour you have given us. :)
I used to know a man who made things like this. He did excellent work. I appreciate this kind of thing even more now that I've known him.
It is more like a museum than a cemetery. I'm remember the sculpture of the lady sitting down, she is so beautiful.
Little Gracie in your previous post was always one of my favorites, I visited her more than once. The fence wasn't there when I saw her.
Not at all depressing, this is one of the most historical and beautiful places in Savannah.
I never thought your photos were inappropriate at all. Thanks for showing such wonderful things - Dave
Beautiful, I thought that the first one was just stunning:)
