We took a walk down to the lake, right down on our shore by our house yesterday.
Right away, we knew something was different.
Then we walked further, and saw
that
we had a visitor
during the night.
Look close to see the destruction we saw:
Look to the left of the branches on the snow and ice. See that tree cut down?:
There were more cut down too!:
Oh gosh...and even MORE cut down!!!:
This one looked like he ate it like an apple and then went right for the top!
But where or where IS the tree he cut down???:
In addition, we saw that he used our fish cleaning table
for
a
BUFFET TABLE!:
See the shavings on the table?
(If you haven't guessed by now, we had a busy BEAVER visit our yard!)
Evidently a very HUNGRY beaver:
This one was chewed with a clean cut!:
Must've tasted like potato chips!:
Looks like he rested here beside the rock for a siesta, pooped out from the munchies:
Before he had dessert!:
Obviously, this must have been the main entree:
See how he chewed that stump in a circular pattern?
A side dish:
And yet another....
Good grief! He did all this eating in ONE NIGHT!!!:
No WONDER he didn't take the rest of the branches with him:
Spring ought to be interesting around here when it comes......
If I hear of the drainage pipe "not working" and of some local flooding....
In the meantime, we just may have to get a posse together to sit on that rock and guard the rest of the trees our yard....
(Besides.....now what in the HECK are we going to tie our boat up to when we pull to shore?
He ATE the tree down that we used to tie our boat up to!)
A side dish:
And yet another....
Good grief! He did all this eating in ONE NIGHT!!!:
No WONDER he didn't take the rest of the branches with him:
did you SEE the size of the main entree???:
See all the sticks left
he chewed them down.
Then we looked at the drainage pipe a little ways from our lot.
He must be hauling them way down the drainage pipe:
See all the sticks left
from
him trying to haul them down the drainage pipe?:
Spring ought to be interesting around here when it comes......
If I hear of the drainage pipe "not working" and of some local flooding....
well,
we now know WHO TO BLAME.................
In the meantime, we just may have to get a posse together to sit on that rock and guard the rest of the trees our yard....
because partner, I love animals....
but I love the trees in our yard beside our lakeshore just as much!!!!!
(Besides.....now what in the HECK are we going to tie our boat up to when we pull to shore?
He ATE the tree down that we used to tie our boat up to!)

Interesting!!!!!!!!
He was so busy at night, and must be sleeping right now.
With all the damages, you can tie your boat to that animal. He must pay for that.
LOL Wow, he was a busy beaver wasn't he? It's amazing how his teeth just shear off those trees so smoothly!
Rainfield: that's an idea! We can lassoo him and have him pull us all over the lake! He must pay for those meals!
Jeanette: He sure was! Can you imagine the strength of those teeth to cut some of those big ones down???
beaver...hungry little sucker too...lol like the dea of hitching your boat to him...
They sure can be destuctive! We've had problems with them in our sewage lagoon and had to get a permit from the DNR to "get rid" of them.
There had to be a whole herd or gaggle or menagerie of beavers to do all that in one night! Busy is the right word.
Wow! He takes the term "busy as a beaver" to a whole new level!
I had no idea they eat at night? He must have had some appetite!
This is darn cool to me...wish you had a photo of the Beaver.
Wow, that would be so cool if you could catch him on camera!
WOW! I had no idea a beaver could eat all that in one night. Keep us posted on the drainpipe...and whether it's clogged with a beaver dam!!
Brian: You hold them down, I'll hitchem....(right after I get his photo) LOL
Cathy: That's what I told Paul..if he comes back I am calling the DNR. We live right in town for cryin' out loud..our deck will be next. ha
Technobabe: Believe it or not, we only saw ONE set of tracks from ONE busy beaver doing all of that.
Eva: It sure does!
Jientje: yes, they usually sleep in their beaver hut during the day and get quite busy at night...I don't know where his house is, he must be swimming in from quite a distance!
Darla: I sure do too! I have been looking outside during full moon nights to see if I can see him to get a photo, but he hasn't come back.
Kearsie: It is on my wish list of photos-to-be-had!
Lynn: Yes, I will...if there is flooding, I will show you all on the blog...but every spring we have SOME flooding on the lakeshore, that is normal...that is why we built our house up a ways from the water.
His storage of branches must have run out. I have seen photos as to how the weigh down branches under water with rocks for later eating.
Holy Cow, Joan... Are you sure that was just ONE???? Looks like an army to me...
Well---I'd do what I needed to do to protect my trees/yard. Good Luck!
Hugs,
Betsy
I noticed that they were all cut at certain angles. Could it be that the beaver understood how to make the trees fall in the direction he wanted?
I am laughing! SOunds like a show from CSI!! I hope you are able to get photos of that busy little beaver!! His wood carving skills are very advanced! :-)
L.D. Well, our lake is frozen, unless he swam under the ice where the drainage pipe drains into the lake...in that case,we might have a good fishing spot there in the spring..unless we lose all our our lures. ha
Betsy: there is no way to really tell, but we saw the path where it walked to the area and it only looked like the tracks of ONE. We'll keep a look out to make sure none come back though.ha
Ratty: it makes you wonder, doesn't it?
Shelley: me, too...but he hasn't been back to our knowledge!
There had to have been more than one culprit...that's a LOT of damage!
I can't get over how much work this beaver did in one night. I have never seen anything like this Joan and found this post so very interesting....its amazing really.
luv you......:-) Hugs
I've never witnessed the results of a beaver's night out. He sure was busy. Go track him down and get us some photos Joan!
wow, he was busy! Hopefully he doesn't go after your deck if you have one!!
I had no idea. They must have teeth like a buzz saw. don't they build dams with sticks and twigs? That was very educational.
Wow! These pictures are amazing. I had no idea that a beaver could do that, especially the one where it looks like a saw cut the tree.
I envy you your retirement. I have been teaching 34 years. My husband got laid off over a year ago, so onward and upward for me.
Great blog!!!!!!
Incredible! Interesting! But boy do I feel tired now! :)
Beaver are very interesting animals and extremely busy. It is amazing what one beaver can do in a short period of time. One summer in GA I followed one around a lake in a canoe. When he finally had enough of me he slapped the water with his tail, that is a very loud sound.
Oh Good Lord-- That must be one seriously BIG beaver to have done all that damage in ONE night!!!!!!
I can't wait to see a picture of him.
Good luck,
jj
Oh gosh, what a hungry beaver. It sounds kind of funny from this end but I am sure you are annoyed at the beaver eating all your trees.
Interesting, beautiful and nice photos !! Great blog you have here !!
Amazing pictures of the hungry rascal's work!
JJ: It sure is a lot of damage! We only saw one set of tracks though. Thank goodness, so far, he has not been back.
Bernie: I know it is hard to believe they can chew these big trees down with just their big teeth, isn't it?
Wanda: Don't worry, Wanda...a beaver is DEFINITELY on my "wish list" of photos to catch..I will prevail! :-}
Sara: It is coated with preservative, so hopefully, if he tried, he'd "spit it out" because of the bitter taste. ha
Grannyann: Indeed they do! I have posted some pictures before of beaver huts on the blog..if you go to the bottom of my page on my blog, there is a little box that says Lijit. Put the term "beaver house" I think it will call up the blogposts where I showed pictures...it was last summer or spring.
VKT: Thanks so much! I hope you join(ed) to my blog as a Follower. And I hope you get to retire as soon as your hubby finds a job...the economy here is slowly returning, so my thoughts and hopes are with you!
Cheryl: Yes, he was so busy he must have been exhausted. My question is: what do beaver use as dental floss? ha Maybe looooong pieces of pine needles?
SquirrelQueen: Yes, I tried to follow one (before I took photographs when I was younger and hiking) and he gave me that LOUD slap of his tail....it scared the crap out of me too! And the water splashed a huge ways..it echoed in the entire pond.
Joanna: He hasn't been back to get a photo, but don't worry..on our treks out in the woods, I will try and capture one on camera for every one to see!
Loree: Yes, we were "annoyed"...as this is our lakefront property and we love the trees on it. Thankfully, he hasn't been back. ha
Unseen: Thanks so much...you are already a Follower to the blog, right? If not, I hope you join..would love to have you here regularly!
Mildred: Thanks. I hope to catch a photo of a beaver somewhere this summer so I can show everyone what they look like up close and personal...my brother owns our old family land and says there is a beaver dam he needs to break up this spring....I will be there with my camera when he does it so I can get him hopefully on camera! I hope you join(ed) my blog as a Follower..have you done that yet?
That is one busy beaver like you said and I would hate to meet up with him. He must have some fantastic teeth on him. Great pictures. Very neat to see!
DVM's Wife: I hope I can catch him (or another beaver) on my camera....but I hope he doesn't come back. ha
They can sure cause some problems..they like the little Aspen..they really can make quite a mess overnight..great photos! When we lived on the lake they loved to visit and cut trees down..our neighbor used to shoot them. She was a wild woman with a rifle:)
Holy crap that is crazy! I wanna see a picture of a Beaver now. Are they mean? LOL!
Far Side: Well, if we have to call the DNR, they will live-trap him and not kill him, but haul him far, far from here. We live on a lake but in the middle of a little town, so they won't want him here.
Brittany: They are normally shy and go under water right away, slapping their huge tails first to warn you...its all slap and no action. ha I hope to someday get a picture of a beaver to show everyone.
