Useless Facts and Trivia: Volume 16

Here are more "Useless Facts and Trivia" for you, along with MY COMMENTS in bold italics, of course!:

1. The original game of "Monopoly" was circular.

Similar to life, money goes in and goes right out! Makes sense, doesn't it? Interesting that they changed the shape later.

2. It costs more to buy a new car today in the United States than it cost Christopher Columbus to equip and undertake three voyages to and from the New World.

That is probably right. That is why the whole 37+ years we have been married, we have always bought used cars. Who wants to pay interest fees on discovering a whole new world?? Yikes!!

3. One-fourth of the world's population lives on less than $200 a year.

I bet none of them own cars. If they do, they are probably living in them. This is a sad statistic, isn't it? Think of it: ONE FOURTH of the world's people make LESS than $200 a year!! Remember that the next time you feel sorry that you can't buy that new pair of shoes until next payday.

4. Ninety million people survive on less than $75 a year.

That is even more shocking than #3 above, isn't it?

5. The sentence "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" uses every letter in the English language.

I SEE you looking for the X-Y and Z...go ahead...sing the abc song...I'll wait.
There.
Are you done? See? They are all there!!

    6. The word racecar and kayak are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left.

Again, I see that you checked both of those words to make sure. One of these days, you are going to trust me.

    7. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is the fear of long words.

Boy, I can see why. Now I am kind of scared of them too. And here I thought it was supercalafragilisticexpealodocious from Mary Poppins. I better take a spoon full of sugar...

    8. Did you know you share your birthday with at least 9 million other people in the world.

And you thought you were "special"!! ha

Of course you share your birthday...there are only so many days in a year you know? But you are the only one with your name and address and mom and dad and dog and family, etc. And that DOES make you special!!

    9. The electric chair was invented by a dentist.

I KNEW it!! Who else could have thought of a place where you sit and be tortured??? It makes perfect sense to me. In fact, it just might be the dentist that I had as a kid when my dad was in the Air Force...because I don't remember any novacaine, and I do remember begging for my life.

    10. All polar bears, despite being near the North Pole, are southpaws.

You can tell, because when you are flying away from the North Pole, they are waving goodbye with their left hands and blowing kisses at you with their left hands too.

    11. "GO" is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.

There you go again. Checking the dictionary. And here I thought it was FU.

12.Americans eat an average of 18 acres of pizza every day.
I am amazed it is not MORE acrege. No, come to think of it, that would be everybody's waistlines.

three and four are mind blowing...especially when you look at them next to the last.

yep, monopoly should hav stayed circular...lol.

Having taught typing, I was familiar with "the quick brown fox," but I want to know how they determined that all polar bears were southpaws!

Also, for your "You thought your job was bad, in researching for my post today, I learned that a gastroentologist in Mineapolis was looking for some flatulence analysts. Good luck filling those positions!

Welcome Home... I have enjoyed your posts while you were in sunny Florida..

Those 'facts' make me realize just how SMALL I am in the big scheme of things in our world...

Should I plan to move to the North Pole since I am a lefty????? ha ha

Can't wait to see your pictures from the trip.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

Pictures of Florida! Yay! That will be fun. I love Florida. (I love any place that has sunshine and palm trees!)

Brian: Yes, it is a good thing to remember at this time of year, especially. We are so spoiled to have all the things we do, aren't we?

Eva: GOOD LORD! Maybe they wear gas masks or something?

Betsy: Thanks! It may be a few more days, as I took so many photos, my computer program says there is not enough disk space to unload them. I will have to take some of my older photos off and put them on CD's first. Aaargh!

Roshni: Thanks! I was glad to post them as a filler while I was away. I will have more photos soon to post of the trip.

Lesley: I had a lot of rain and fog this trip, but when it was nice out, I took as many as I could! Now my computer is giving me problems downloading them due to disk space. I am working on it, so I hope I can post them soon.

Yikes I spend more in a week than #'s 3 and 4 make....makes me think I am doing something wrong.

Loved the fact about the dentist, I do believe my current dentist is a relative of the inventor.

    Welcome back, I missed you..Hugs

I am struck by numbers 3 and 4, but really, I'm fascinated by the concept of round Monopoly. Does that make me a bad person?

    The Retired One said...

Bernie: Thanks! Yes, #3 and #4 are shocking, aren't they? I am glad to be back EXCEPT for our cold wave outside. It is miserable to go from Point A to Point B due to the slippery roads and cold. I hope it gets better for Christmas week.

Blissed: Round monopoly would be interesting. No, you are not a bad person...curious, just like all of us..that's what makes the trivia stuff so interesting!

I remember 'the quick brown fox' all too well from typing class. And who else but a dentist could invent a such a devise as the electric chair.

Welcome back, be careful on those slick roads.

    Number 10 was hysterical!

Again, glad you're home and that you had a great time. Can't wait to see the pix!

These are always so good. And yes, I DID say the ABC song on #5......
    :D

Speaking of sharing birthdays, my birthday is also McDonald's national pickle day. I remember a long time ago looking for an event that my birthday fell on, but that was all I could find. Awful, just awful. :D

    DJan said...

Well, it's about time you got home. You were missed, you know, even though we got some really nice pictures. Welcome back, and yes, it's a lovely thing to start the day with some real belly laughs.

There are some wonderful bits of trivia here. I will borrow the one about racecar and kayak for our family Christmas Quiz.

    The Retired One said...

SquirrelQueen: Yes, we are in post-vacation shock related to the snow, cold and nasty roads. I will be back to normal in a few weeks. ha

Insanity: Thanks! I am having trouble loading my pix on my computer due to taking so many and limited disk space (arrrrgh!) so my pictures processing may take a few days. I will be working on it today. If it had not been foggy or raining so much down there, I would have taken so many more.

Sue: Isn't it funny that we all sing the ABC song even when we are older?! That is some brainwashing we get in elementary school! ha

Ratty: McDonald's National Pickle Day, huh? Well, you must be absolutely THRILLED! Just thinking of my LAST post, just be glad it isn't anal wart day or something. hahahaaaaaa

DJan: Thanks, Sweetie! I am trying hard to get my photos off my memory card and onto my computer...I am getting messages that my memory disk is limited, so I will be busy today putting some older photos on CD's to provide my programs with more space first. Dang. That will take me some time! But I am determined to get it done, as I took many photos on the trip I would like to share.

Alan: That is great! I am glad to have been some service! ha

Loree: ????? Did I say that word in this blog? Or did you comment to someone else?

Ellie: Thanks! I do these every now and then and it has been fun. I hate to always post photographs!

Sara: I was just reading some of your older blogposts last night. Cole is getting SO big and he is a cutie pie! I just know this will be your best Christmas ever. Glad to see you stopping by my blog again, too.

Dreamwalker: I can believe it too.

I laughed SO hard about sharing my birthday with nine million other people. See, we really aren't THAT special : )

    Brittany said...

I think I eat the most of that pizza by myself LOL I'm a pizza lover! And I like to pretend nobody else has my birthday LOL! (I know, I know, delusional!!!!)

    The Retired One said...

Life: I am glad I brought you a chuckle!

Brittany: I am a pizza lover too.. I could easily have it once a week, but my hubby doesn't like to have it quite that often.ha
It is okay that you think only you are having a birthday on your birthday. You are allowed to live in your own world. Don't we all???
