Fabulous unFolding Ferns!

We went for a ride in the woods about a month and a half ago
and
it had just rained earlier in the day.

Everything was this intense, neon green color.

I felt like it was a tropical rain forest in the north.

But what really hit my eye
were
these brilliant, artistic
unfolding ferns.....

I just fell in love with them.

So here are some shots of the unfolding ferns....
I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Just look at this twisty, convoluted fern
that nature designed to come up through the soil
and unfold
right before our eyes!:
(If only I could pack as well when we go on trips and I am trying to stuff my suitcase!)

I loved how the sun hit these ferns coming up from the forest floor:

The sun hitting the head of this fern reminded me of when
you first light a sparkler on the 4th of July:

A twisty tied curl (along with a bug!):

It's spring....
it had to wear a wooly hat to keep warm
while sprouting:

A bunch of newborn ferns!:

By now, they are full grown, huge ferns.....
but
I like them best when they are newborns......................................................

I've tried to take pictures of ferns, they look a lot like your pictures in my own head, but they never ever look this good! I really enjoyed these, thanks!!!

The shades of green on those baby ferns are incredible. Love the fuzzy one.

How interesting, Joan. I have never noticed ferns when they are in that stage of growth.... Very pretty... I can see why you like them in the infant stage....

Thanks for sharing...
Hugs,
Betsy

Here in Maine we call those baby ferns fiddleheads. We pick them, boil them with a small piece of salt pork and then eat them with butter and/or vinegar. they are delicious!

What a neat sight. Never knew ferns were like that.

A good way to describe them; how you said about a sparkler on the 4th of July! I never realized they had wooly heads!

Fiddle heads! New growth in spring is so gorgeous.

DJan: You are most welcome!

Linda: Yes, the fuzzy one was my favorite too!

Lotus: They are so beautiful on the floor of the forest...regal, almost.

Rainfield: Yes, I think they know many secrets of the forest.

Betsy: Take the time to find them in the spring..they are really neat.

Brian: An EXACTLY perfect description of them...stretching like a baby upon awaking! Love the poet in you, as always.

Eva: They are edible???? Who knew!! Are all newborn ferns edible, or just certain kinds? Because we have more than one kind of fern here.

Ann: So glad I could show them to you!

Cathy: I think they shed that sheath shortly after popping up out of the ground...I only saw that on a few of them, but I thought it was a kodak moment. ha

Linda: I didn't know they were called fiddleheads before, but a few of you have mentioned them that way. I will have to research them more!

Yes, Baby plants seem to share much of the cuteness of baby animals. I love the way they fall in and out of focus making them look almost alive.

Very beautiful. Ferns are some of the nicest looking plants. I wish I would encounter more of them.

I love ferns of all kinds. When I had my first home in Florida, our covered entrance ws fillel with about a dozen different varieties. They were so beautiful. They just thrived on that humid shade.

Your pictures are wonderful.

Gorgeous shots, I love to see fern unfurling like this. Love the darkness of your background in these shots.

Alan: Thanks...they are really neat looking when they first pop up through the ground.

Ratty: We have about four different kinds of ferns here....

Beth: Thanks so much.

Technobabe: That is fantastic! I know I look at everything so much different now that I do photography!

Diane: Thanks a lot!

RNSane: We have about 4 kinds here...I am going to incorporate some wild ferns with my hostas in a shade garden this year, I think.

SquirrelQueen: Thanks!! They were all over in the woods, so I was lucky to be able to "pick" where I shot them.

Biana: Ah, shucks!! Thanks! :0}
