I am always mesmerized by ice formations, especially near open water in the winter.
I wasn't disappointed on this trip out to the big lake.
This is a snow covered little island just off the shore. I loved the "dripping" ice formations on the edge of the island:
Snow fingers with ice! Looks like winter lava:
One of the most photographed places on Marquette's Lake Superior shoreline is this red coast guard station:
But in the winter, even the simple frozen shoreline can be gorgeous:
Close up, the shelves of ice have a character all of their own:
These looked like icy fingers dipping into chocolate pudding:

love those ice formations....need to take a trip just so you can tellus where to take a walk to take in all these amazing sights.
Just recently saw two DVDs featuring extreme winter weather... and think they should have hired you as your photos are much better than theirs!
Joan, I hate to be repetitive, but, once again, you've got some beautiful photographs! We are expecting 14" of snow, but we've got none of that spectacular ice!
Brian: Whenever you are ready to come up just let me know---there are so many nice camping sights and lakes,etc...we would love to be your tour guide.

Up here in the Pacific Northwest we just finished the warmest January on record, and the Winter Olympics are next week! I hope all turns out well, they should have had them in the U.P., eh? Great pictures, as usual.
I'd comment, but I have to go turn the heat up now; for some reason I seem to be shivering and cold!
Ice, snow, snowsqualls, we have it all, like Lake Superior, just smaller, except for the depth of snow!

Winter looks beautiful for sure - in the picture. I don't know if I could stand that cold anymore. I have not even warm shoes left...*smile*...

Wow---your ice makes mine look like NOTHING... ha ha.... I love your photos. That coast guard station looks neat... Is there a lighthouse there???? I love lighthouses ---so sometime, you will have to take a picture of it just for me...

I am sitting here in much warmer San Francisco, loving these spectacular photos and shivering just a bit.
I have to admit I don't think I have ever seen ice like that next to water! Loving the ice formations and that pic with the lacy tree! Wonderful as always!
I showed my hubby the icy photos and we both like the Coast Guard station (his father was in the Coast Guard).

These are wonderful pics. I live Upper Michigan; about an hour south of Lake Superior and about an hour west of Lake Michigan. Since moving down from Alaska 5 years ago we've only seen the lakes in the summer months. However; these are great pics and we may have to venture out in the winter. Thanks for sharing.

I grew up on Lake Erie in Ohio. Your wonderful pictures reminded me of just how COLD it gets back there.
