It is a long strip of dredged out water so that large boats can find shelter during bad weather on Lake Superior.
I don't believe I have posted these photos of Portage Entry for you before now, so before I REALLY get behind on my blog post photos, I decided to post them today for you.
Hopefully, your computer sceen is large enough to see the entire other side
of Portage
Entry and the lighthouse to the right of this photo:
Entry and the lighthouse to the right of this photo:
There were tons of water wild flowers that I was not familiar with along the sides of the Portage.
Here is a little purple cone shaped one I really liked:
And another deep purple wildflower which I don't know the name of.
If there are any experts out there that want to tell us its name, that would be great!:
This sailboat was across from us on the Portage. I thought the whole shoreline was so picturesque!:
I probably posted this one already on another post, but I loved these spiked wildflowers that were there. There were bees everywhere on them!:
I just loved this lighthouse way on the end
of the opposite shore from us:
Another shot of those purple cone shaped water flowers:Right when we got to the Portage, there was this old, antique boat at the first
boat tieup spot.
I loved it!:
All along the walkway were these huge bright orange tie up spots for the large boats to tie up to. I loved the rusty chains on one of them:
I could just imagine that old boat on the big roller waves on Lake Superior, water splashing over the top of the boat!:
We have lived in the U.P. for years and have never stopped to look at Portage Entry and we really enjoyed looking at the lighthouse, boat, and the many wildflowers growing in the bushes and along the waterway.
I hope you got a glimpse of its beauty from my post today.
Oh! What peaceful exquisite pics you have. Love the flowers, the yacht looks like fun, love lighthouses.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely eve. TTFN ~ Marydon
Yes, I definitely got the idea from your pictures of what it was like. You know, I just can't help but think of you crouching down, taking pictures of an old rusty chain, and thinking that it takes an artist's mind to see the beauty in these things and then share with me on your blog!! Smiles to you today!
ReplyDeleteJoan, I love coming to your post. They always make me feel good, and I so enjoy seeing places I would never have seen unless through your eyes. It's a wonderful experience and I thank you very much for it. Another post of amazing photo's, .... :-) Hugs
ReplyDeleteThis place is just beautiful. I have a thing about lighthouses. They fascinate me. I love the wildflowers and boats, too.
ReplyDeleteThe purple cone-shaped are water hyacinth!
ReplyDeleteThey are startlingly absent around our frontage, since Eddie & Eva and the 4 goslings devoured them. The plants are still producing leaves, though. All is not lost!
love the macro flower shots you do. i think the rusty chain though grabbed me in this one.
ReplyDeleteBlushing Rose: I am so glad you liked it. I had taken the photos so long ago, I almost forgot to post them!
ReplyDeleteDJan: Thanks! Yes, you pictured it right..I was crouching down because I thought the rusty chain was so typical of the boating history there. I always think it is such a treasure hunt to go to new places to find photos to take. I love it.
Bernie: I wish you could be beside me during some of my photo adventures..you would love some of the places I have been blessed to visit up here.
Judy: I know! Three of my favorite things were there! If a duck or an eagle would have showed up, it would have been perfect. ha
Jenn: Thanks for the answer to the purple cone shaped one...it is so cute, I loved them.
Brian: You know, as soon as I saw that rusty chain, I HAD to take it...I imagined how many boats it held and where those boats had been on Lake Superior! You would have loved the old boat in person too...it had to be from the 50's!
ReplyDeleteLake Superior is my favorite place. I really thought that was an unusual wooden boat. It looked like it could be almost unseaworthy. The orange with chains is my favorite. Great photos, all of them. I have never heard of that area. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletebeautiful shots once agsin!
ReplyDeleteSo many great pictures of the boats, the water, and the lighthouses. I really like lighthouses. I've seen many of those purple flowers from your first flower picture. None of my pictures of them have come out nearly as good.
ReplyDeleteJoan, I LOVE this post! Especially the lighthouse photos, the flowers and the boats, actually I like all of them!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind comment on my blog, very much appreciated. :)

so very beautiful, your pictures made me feel like I was there
ReplyDeleteA very picturesque place.
ReplyDeleteThat boat reminded me of the boat they used in the Jaws movie! LOL! I love that lighthouse, very vey pretty!
ReplyDeleteI loved the rusty chain. What is it about old weathered objects that are so appealing?!
ReplyDeleteI'd never even heard of this place before! We gotta get out more....oh, wait, we will soon be getting out more!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the wonderful "seashore shots"!
You have such a great eye! Loved the angles of the boat photos you shot especially!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Did you ever receive my gift?
:-)
L.D.:You need to take a trip up here and go to Copper Harbor during the color season, which will be in the next 3 weeks...Portage Entry is on the way and there is so much to see in the U.P. as you follow Lake Superior and its shoreline!
ReplyDeleteEva: Thanks so much. It was a lovely day temperature wise and we had such a leisurely stroll down the waterway. Just perfect!
Ratty: I have to be by water most of the time, so a lot of my pictures deal with lakes, rivers, streams. Just inborn I guess. ha
Susanne: You are welcome! I am still really behind in reading others' blogs because I have been out enjoying our warm, autumn weather and the changing of the beautiful leaves, so forgive me if I sporadically leave you comments on your blog during this busy time for me.
Sara: I am so glad! That is my goal..to make my Followers/readers feel like they have been there with me!
Loree: It sure is a beautiful place! I hope to go back there this fall and take some "color" pictures of the changing leaves...but up here, EVERY place is pretty when the leaves are changing, so I may run out of time to do it.
Jientje: Yes, that is an old seafaring fishing boat, no doubt!
Sue: Hope that holds for people, because I am pretty "weathered" too!
:-}
Cathy: You would love it there!
Shelley: Nope, I never received your gift yet. I was thinking of that the other day, but I figured that you must have just gotten busy.
I hope it isn't lost in the mail!
When did you mail it???
Just so you know, I look at all your pictures and blogs, even if I don't comment.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet you and your husband have a great time relaxing together. It makes me excited to think about relaxing with my Hubs in the future.
It's so pretty there. I love the lighthouse pictures. The first purple flower could be Blue Pickerelweed. I have some in my pond and it looks quite a bit like that.
ReplyDeleteHmmm....Portage. I have yet to venture there. Thank you for sharing yet another place, I must see. And ooo...eee... I love a good vintage boat. Too awesome! What a find to stumble upon.
ReplyDeleteMakes me long for a long walk on the docks in Seward Alaska! :)
ReplyDeleteKearsie: I am so glad you are still reading me too! I read yours too, but summer has been very busy and sometimes I am 4 or 5 blogposts behind when I read others so I don't comment either until I get more caught up. You still make me laugh and I enjoy your blog very much too.
ReplyDeleteYes, my hubby and I get along great, he is my best friend and we love our trips out and about together!
Catherine: I am the same way, there isn't a lighthouse I don't love.
Ashley: You would love it there and with your telescopic lens, you could take some fantastic pix.
Insanity: I would LOVE to go to Alaska. We are thinking about taking a cruise. Any suggestions of what sites to make sure we see if we do?
I forgot to answer earlier your question about planting sunflowers. I usually plant them at the beginning of June and sometimes even a little later here in zone 8. They are pretty fast growing, they just need enough time to be able to bloom.
ReplyDeleteI just can't get over your wonderful photographs.Love the textures and colors.Just terrific!
ReplyDeleteBoomer Baby Bliss
xxx♥ooo
I will definitely have to show these pics to my little sailor!
ReplyDeleteSo many things to enjoy from this post , including the bees and the flowers:).
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful place, I love the lighthouse. The old boat reminds me of some I have seen on the Oregon Coast. Great photos.
ReplyDeleteCatherine: Thanks. I think I will try planting some seeds next year. Do you just use the ones found in the birdseed dept. or do you buy other seeds to plant them?
ReplyDeleteBoomer: Thanks so much!!
Maniacal: I hope he likes them!
Keats: glad you enjoyed them. I love taking any nature photos and birds and animals too!
SquirrelQueen: Oregon is on my "bucket list" to see...I know I would love the jagged rock coastlines for photography!
Joan, thank you so much for your comments! I'm always glad to see you on my blog! I think you are posting pretty often, and you are right, it's difficult to be at the computer when the days are so warm and sunny! Usually I post once or twice a week, but I posted more often recently. The boys started school, the garden doesn't need a lot of attention now, but the main reason is that I have so many pictures and memories of the summer trips, that I need to post them now. If not now, then never. Your pictures are very good, high quality and interesting. That bear got away from you, next time get at least his rear on picture!
ReplyDeleteThat first shot is fantastic, I kinda have a thing for lighthouses. I know, completely unique, that's why there are NO lighthouse figurines or paintings available anywhere *eyeroll* It's SO NICE (now that I'm rocking a new puter and high speed: YAY ME!) to be able to see ALL of your pics without taking 45 mins to fully see one blog post... Yeah, that's why I've kinda been MIA... But now HeHeHe I'm Baaaack :-D Love ya Joanie, see you again soon.
ReplyDeleteTatyana: I would have been happy to even catch his rear...because who doesn't want to see a bear rear. Get it?? bwahahahaha. Love your blog, don't worry, I read it regularly and drool over your awesome photos.
ReplyDeleteAria: I have been missing you girlfriend! SOOO glad you got up to speed so you can load the photos.
