We were out in the autumn woods one day
overlooking a pond.
I always sneak up to these ponds in case there is any wildlife on them to photograph.
I wasn't disappointed.
Way off in the pond was a Canada goose
and
swimming next to the goose
was a tiny duck:
She looked so pretty against the fall colors, swimming in the sun:
I was surprised to see the goose swimming so closely with the duck.
It was like she was protecting it or something:
If the duck swam right, the goose swam right:
As I was concentrating on my zoom to get their pictures,
I heard a loud flapping above my head.
As I turned I saw
why
the goose was concerned for the tiny duck.
Do YOU see why?:
Just look above the pond.
Where the tall, dead tree is.
Still don't see it?
Maybe THIS will help:
Here is a closeup of the eagle just landing on the dead tree:
I think he wanted a tiny duck lunch:
But, he did see the Goose too.
And then he heard me clicking my shutter across the pond.
He took off.
And the goose and duck slowly swam away too:
I think we might have saved the duck's life.
I think the Eagle may be very, very mad at me.
But that's okay....
there is plenty of dead deer carcasses on the highway for the Eagle to eat.....
And I may just catch up with the Eagle there and get some more shots soon.

ReplyDeleteHi Joan, Yes--you probably did save that little duck's life... Hope he said THANKS..... Gorgeous photo of the Eagle though.... WOW!!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
So sweet to see the goose and duck swimming together! They say winter brings the birds more together - the nuthatches, chickadees and downy woodpeckers hang out, and so it makes sense the duck and goose wood. Lovely story and wonderful photos!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic eagle, duck and goose shots and the autumn colors at the pond are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGreat story to put together with photos to prove it. Eagles as you say, usually live on carion but they can take ducks.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard not to take sides in nature's battles.
ReplyDeleteVery nice shots and I'm glad that the duck did not become an eagle happy meal, not that day, anyway!
ReplyDeleteThe Eagle looked intent on doing something!
ReplyDeleteLoved the photo of the Eagle landing, Joan!
Incredible snapshot of nature in action, who knew a goose would lookout for a baby duck. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteThat is so wonderful that the goose was looking out for the little duck.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, as always!
ReplyDeleteOh! I must read the rules after I leave this comment before I forget why I'm staring at this page...(forgetfulness, the bane of old people).
ReplyDeleteI find nature fantastic when you can see the gift of compassion and protection being done with no thought of payback as happens with humans.
I'm also glad you didn't see a different version of Animal Planet played out on that little duck.
Goes to show you that everyone should have a goose for a friend! Great photos..you still have awesome Fall color..we are bare and brown:(
ReplyDeleteJust found you and will be back. What gorgeous photos! I love the goose protecting the duck. I do hope the eagle got fed but am glad the goose protected his lil buddy until you, the superhuman with the magic clicking eyeball, scared him away. We have lots of Canada geese here in Arkansas this time of year. It irritates the snooty rednecks in their monster houses by the golf course. Which just makes me love them more. (The geese, not the snooty rednecks.)
