We took a walk down to the lake, right down on our shore by our house yesterday.
Right away, we knew something was different.
Then we walked further, and saw
that
we had a visitor
during the night.
Look close to see the destruction we saw:
See all the branches laying in the snow?Look to the left of the branches on the snow and ice. See that tree cut down?:
There were more cut down too!:
Oh gosh...and even MORE cut down!!!:
This one looked like he ate it like an apple and then went right for the top!
But where or where IS the tree he cut down???:
In addition, we saw that he used our fish cleaning table
for
a
BUFFET TABLE!:
See the shavings on the table?(If you haven't guessed by now, we had a busy BEAVER visit our yard!)
Evidently a very HUNGRY beaver:

Looks like he rested here beside the rock for a siesta, pooped out from the munchies:

Obviously, this must have been the main entree:

Good grief! He did all this eating in ONE NIGHT!!!:
No WONDER he didn't take the rest of the branches with him:

Then we looked at the drainage pipe a little ways from our lot.
He must be hauling them way down the drainage pipe:

Spring ought to be interesting around here when it comes......
If I hear of the drainage pipe "not working" and of some local flooding....
well,
we now know WHO TO BLAME.................
In the meantime, we just may have to get a posse together to sit on that rock and guard the rest of the trees our yard....
because partner, I love animals....
but I love the trees in our yard beside our lakeshore just as much!!!!!
(Besides.....now what in the HECK are we going to tie our boat up to when we pull to shore?

With all the damages, you can tie your boat to that animal. He must pay for that.
LOL Wow, he was a busy beaver wasn't he? It's amazing how his teeth just shear off those trees so smoothly!

beaver...hungry little sucker too...lol like the dea of hitching your boat to him...
ReplyDeleteThey sure can be destuctive! We've had problems with them in our sewage lagoon and had to get a permit from the DNR to "get rid" of them.
ReplyDeleteThere had to be a whole herd or gaggle or menagerie of beavers to do all that in one night! Busy is the right word.

Technobabe: Believe it or not, we only saw ONE set of tracks from ONE busy beaver doing all of that.

Jientje: yes, they usually sleep in their beaver hut during the day and get quite busy at night...I don't know where his house is, he must be swimming in from quite a distance!
Darla: I sure do too! I have been looking outside during full moon nights to see if I can see him to get a photo, but he hasn't come back.
Kearsie: It is on my wish list of photos-to-be-had!
Lynn: Yes, I will...if there is flooding, I will show you all on the blog...but every spring we have SOME flooding on the lakeshore, that is normal...that is why we built our house up a ways from the water.
His storage of branches must have run out. I have seen photos as to how the weigh down branches under water with rocks for later eating.

I noticed that they were all cut at certain angles. Could it be that the beaver understood how to make the trees fall in the direction he wanted?

ReplyDeleteL.D. Well, our lake is frozen, unless he swam under the ice where the drainage pipe drains into the lake...in that case,we might have a good fishing spot there in the spring..unless we lose all our our lures. ha
ReplyDeleteBetsy: there is no way to really tell, but we saw the path where it walked to the area and it only looked like the tracks of ONE. We'll keep a look out to make sure none come back though.ha

There had to have been more than one culprit...that's a LOT of damage!

ReplyDeleteBeaver are very interesting animals and extremely busy. It is amazing what one beaver can do in a short period of time. One summer in GA I followed one around a lake in a canoe. When he finally had enough of me he slapped the water with his tail, that is a very loud sound.

Oh gosh, what a hungry beaver. It sounds kind of funny from this end but I am sure you are annoyed at the beaver eating all your trees.

SquirrelQueen: Yes, I tried to follow one (before I took photographs when I was younger and hiking) and he gave me that LOUD slap of his tail....it scared the crap out of me too! And the water splashed a huge ways..it echoed in the entire pond.
Joanna: He hasn't been back to get a photo, but don't worry..on our treks out in the woods, I will try and capture one on camera for every one to see!

ReplyDeleteThey can sure cause some problems..they like the little Aspen..they really can make quite a mess overnight..great photos! When we lived on the lake they loved to visit and cut trees down..our neighbor used to shoot them. She was a wild woman with a rifle:)

ReplyDeleteFar Side: Well, if we have to call the DNR, they will live-trap him and not kill him, but haul him far, far from here. We live on a lake but in the middle of a little town, so they won't want him here.
