If you have been following my last few blogposts, you know that I have been telling you about a trip we took to see a fellow Blogger buddy, Cathy from Yooper Yarns. I have been showing you all the places we saw around the Newberry, Michigan area when we visited her and her husband, Dan.
After we left Crisp Point lighthouse (see the post below this one), we were getting kind of hungry.
On the way up County Road 500, we had noticed a sign that said Lake Culhane State Forest Campground and had driven in to take a look. We decided to return there and make a picnic lunch for ourselves.

This is the drive into Lake Culhane. It is amazing! Tall, beautiful pine trees everywhere:
We were amazed because there wasn't a single camper using the campground on this particular day.
It was chilly outside, but it was sunny and a beautiful spot!

Half of the campsites were on the water, like this one:
You DID remember the marshmallows, didn't you????
Love it! What an awesome find. And {yums} to campfire food.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see it looks like you guys had a wonderful trip.
I love camping! I need to go out an do some shots for my next portfolio for class. It's landscapes this go... unfortunately there isn't much around here except buildings. I'll find someplace. You seem to have no lack of scenery around you!
ReplyDeleteHow pretty! I love the picture with the clouds reflecting in the water.
ReplyDeletethat tree looks like it is made with antlers! we love to camp...your fire pics got me excited...hopefully here in a couple weeks we will be out ourselves. lovely pics!
ReplyDeleteYOU FOUND IT!!!! This is one of our favorite stops along the way to Crisp Point, although we've never enjoyed it like you guys did!!! What a great idea!! Hot dogs and a campfire for lunch!! When Dan and I sell our park and are actually able to go camping again (NOT ON OUR OWN CAMPGROUND!!) THIS is one place we want to go! Thanks for sharing the photos!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of fun. The fall up there is such a nice time. The air is crisp and the lake is so calm and clear. Beautiful shots.
ReplyDeleteThat first picture is simply amazing. They are all good, but that one... the trees, the whole thing is just beautiful. I wonder where all the people are, other than you two, that is. It's just beautiful there. Haven't they heard about sweaters?
ReplyDeleteI remembered the marshmallows - and I also have Hershey's chocolate and graham crackers so we can have smores! :-)
ReplyDeleteI miss trees like that!
ReplyDeleteAwww, you had far better weather than we did! Not fair. LOL! Isn't Cathy the nicest? I so wish I could have been there when you visited her and Dan. Yes, I am all for a Yooper blogger's get together. Even though we don't live up in da' U.P. we still pay those twice a year property taxes with a Newberry zip code! Keep me in the loop as to your plans for getting together. Where is this campground? Is it the eastern part of 500 or western towards Grand Marais? You and your husband looked like you had a fantastic time.
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous!! I would love to be able to walk around in those woods. I like it when no one is around. Love your camp fire too and those hot dogs made me crave for one but I haven't eaten any in years. They always tasted better like that! Yum! Another great set of photos and post Joan!!
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous photos!! Was it empty because it was cold? I love the crispness. And would love to walk through that forest. Just lovely.
ReplyDeleteI've never understood the appeal of roasted hot dogs or marshmellows...but the scenery is yummy!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a wonderful place. My goal next year is to find even bigger places than I go to now. I hope to find places like that one.
ReplyDeleteMust have been one great camping...
ReplyDeleteMy Travelogue, Savoir-Faire
What a perfect place for lunch, that is a gorgeous campground. I love the photo of the tree roots at the edge of the lake and the reflection on the water is a wonderful bonus. Great photos.
ReplyDeleteOh I have missed you...just catching up on your post. How wonderful you were able to meet up with Cathy, wonderful for both of you and for us to see your beautiful photo's. Love them and am so happy you had such a good time and saw all the beautiful scenry, trees, lighthouses, clouds, especially the clouds reflected in the water...absolutely gorgeous. Happy to be back just to read your post. Luv ya.....:-) Hugs
ReplyDeleteHeading home through the U.P. yesterday, it really struck us how "empty" it really is up there.....and how much we miss it at times. Though I LOVE where I am now, sometimes its just a bit too full of people, and I long for those empty beaches and lakes that you can have all to yourself.
ReplyDeleteTake care!
Great picnic spot.
ReplyDeleteAshley: We really did have a wonderful trip. And now the leaves are so beautiful up here, I can't take enough pictures fast enough.
ReplyDeleteVaBookworm: That is for sure...we are very blessed to have beautiful nature all around us!
Catherine: Thanks so much. I love that picture too...I am always mesmerized by water and sky.
Brian: You are going camping soon? Can't wait to read your poems about being out there with the little guys!
Cathy: Oh yes, we found it..it was beautiful. If we still had a camper, we would have definitely stayed the night there.
L.D.: Thanks, yes autumn up here is spectacular with its colors, smells, crisp air and beauty. I am out as much as possible taking photos these days before the wind and snow comes.
DJan: We wondered where everyone was, too....but I love it when we go someplace gorgeous and there aren't others around...it is like our private resort or playground then.
Shelley: Hope there is room in the truck for me too. ha
Brittany: I like a big forest of tall pines too...and of course maple trees here because they turn a gorgeous red in the autumn.
DVM's Wife: Lake Culhane is right off Co.Rd. 500, on the east side..there is a sign to direct you to turn in there...it is fantastic..you must visit it!
I will definitely let you know if I can organize a Yooper Blogger meeting. Probably I will aim for spring due to the changing weather here during the winter.
Ginnymo: Thanks! We hadn't had hotdogs over a campfire in years before this trip, either. Aren't they great that way?
Boomer: It was mid week and it was cold, so probably most of the tourists now are done with their camping up here.
JJ: Oh, they are delicious! It is part of our childhood memories, too..of camping with our families, so part of its appeal is nostalgia, too.
Ratty: you HAVE to come to the U.P, Ratty. It isn't that far from your area and you would love it...most places here when you hike does not have a lot of people and you can hike for miles and miles...
Mitr Friend: It was lovely, thanks!
SquirrelQueen: Thanks so much. It was such fun taking them at such a beautiful place!
Bernie: I have missed you too. I won't get to your blogs for a few days probably, because I have been out getting more autumn photos, but I will read them!
Sue: When you come to the U.P. again, you have to let me know so I can meet you! Yes, a lot of the areas are empty when you hike, which I love here!! It is like having your own playground!
Loree: It sure was!!!
Someone told me that the largest imports to the US in the 1800's was prism's for lighthouses. Awesome pic's! All of them!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!!
Diane: I believe it..there is a gigantic prism on display at our Maritime Museum in Marquette, it is pretty impressive!! Thanks for the nice kudos on my photos...I sure love being out there taking them for you too.
ReplyDeleteYummy! I love hotdogs cooked on an open campfire.....and samoas! Great photos.
ReplyDeleteEva: We hadn't done that in years before now, so it was a treat!
