One group in particular are pretty striking in that they are black and white and very textured. They look like they have a lace overlay on them.
So, I decided to dedicate a blogpost to some photos I took of them. Enjoy!:
Two varieties...the "pancake" shaped one and the capped one:
They come up so fast, they still have the dirt from where they sprouted within their caps:

One neighbor, who said he knew what he was doing, picked the edible ones from our lawn, after asking.
I was fine with that.
I sure as heck don't want to try eating any.
Dang, come to think of it, I should have had him sign a disclaimer or waiver or something.
Never mind. Forget what I said above. What I MEANT to say is that I ALLEGEDLY told him he could possibly pick them........

lmao! I don't think I'd ever be brave enough to eat anything out of my yard! Well, in the event that it's a bad mushroom, hopefully he's not a neighbor you like!
ReplyDeleteOne thing for sure, if he picked the wrong ones, he won't be back for more. I don't think I have seen any of those kinds of mushrooms before. We get the mushroom crops usually popping up in our yard in June. What is funny is that ours look like lawn ornaments and you have to look close to see they are the real thing. Nice photos of rooms.

Everyone is posting pictures of mushrooms and they are all so lovely. Not sure why but I haven't seen any here where I live, maybe I should walk closer to the woods tomorrow, I'd like to see some as well. Great post and great photo's, how is your neighbour? Hugs

ReplyDeleteI think you're wise not to eat what you aren't sure about. Sometimes, they are called "toadstools" in English. Well, there's a reason for that. I'm pretty sure that the English word derives from the German "Todstuhl", which mean's "death chair". But dictionary.com says it comes from the Middle English. Either way, it means the same thing: "Beware of what you are putting into your mouth". I always enjoy your photos.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't eat any of those for a million bucks! But some people eat pine cones, remember Euell Gibbons? We have one that comes up that is orange and looks like a popsicle, really!
ReplyDeleteI love to look (and not touch or eat) the wild mushrooms that grow in the woods and out by the garden...there's one called Devil's Snuff...when it turns brown if you poke it with a stick, brown spores pour out that look like snuff...don't suppose I'll be inhaling any of that!!! Lovely pictures, but no cooking, now!

ReplyDeleteI just visited the U.P. Oh my gosh what a wonderful place. I loved it so much. I would love to see it in the winter. Please post pics just for me (I guess others could see them too). Lake Superior was breath-taking. I loved all the lakes, rocks, forests, people, etc. Pictured Rocks, oh my. Out of this world. One of my favorite towns was Grand Marais. I will return one day.

Bernie: My neighbor is just fine. :-} There are still a ton of mushrooms in the woods...we went for a 5 hour hike to a remote part of land jutting out into Lake Superior yesterday (boy, am I sore today!) and there were a ton of different mushrooms on the hike.

Rainfield: The black and white ones I took probably aren't edible..but there were white ones right next to them that my neighbor took and ate. Evidently , they grow right next to each other and he knows the difference. ME? No thanks, I wouldn't try ANY. :-}
Ms. Fiddlesticks: Oh, you came here!! I would have loved to meet you! Any blogger is a friend of mine. Yes, I will take winter photos, but not as many. We get extreme cold and a lot of snow so it is difficult to get out into the woods for me. I will definitely take some snow pictures, though and I hope to snowshoe into one of our local waterfalls and get those photos this winter too! So stay tuned! Did you join on as a Follower yet?
