Copper Harbor, Lake Medora and Lake Superior

I mentioned a few blogposts back that I visited my brother's cabin at Lake Medora by Copper Harbor.

If you look at a map of Michigan, the Upper Peninsula is a little strip of land above the "mitten shaped" part of Michigan, and its north shore is Lake Superior. When you look at the map there is a little "finger" part of the peninsula that points out north toward Canada. At the tip of the "finger" lays Copper Harbor.

As you can imagine, it is beautiful and full of views of the jagged rocky coastline of Lake Superior.

Here is a map of the area: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Copper+Harbor&state=MI#a/maps/m::3:47.47326:-87.910154:0:::::1:1:1::/e

Sorry I couldn't link it directly using the link tool on blogpost for some reason, but if you click on the website listed above, you will get to the maps.

We will probably go there again sometime this month to catch the wonderful color season of autumn leaves there.

Here is a photo of the drive up to the end of the "finger" of land.

See how the trees hang over the road?

It is beautiful!

I took it out of our car's windshield so you could see

what it is like driving up there:

Oh, and if you go?

You are going to want to go in the spring, summer or fall. Because it gets the most snow of almost anywhere in Michigan.

Look at this road sign:

THAT is how much snow they got last year in that exact spot.

240.9 inches!

Of course it snows and melts some and snows some more, so the snow isn't that high on the road that is in the picture....but they got that much snow in one season!

Anway, on with my photo show.

Lake Medora is on the way to Copper Harbor and is only about 7 miles from there.

I took this photo from my brother's boat sitting on Lake Medora.

Looming straight ahead is Brockway Mountain.

You can drive your car up there and it has fantastic views.

When the color season comes I will return there and take photos from the top of the mountain.

Across from town was a little point of land that you could hike on that had some really nice places to see the rocky shores of Lake Superior:

Here is another view from the hike:

You can look back over at the tiny town of Copper Harbor.

Next time I go, I will go downtown and take some photos of the cute craft stores and little restaurants along the waterfront.

Before I close this post, I wanted to share some photos that I was lucky to get at my brother's cabin on Lake Medora of the female mallard ducks. Isn't she gorgeous?:

This rock sits right next to my brother's cabin's dock and they are so tame they come and sit here frequently:

She obviously was prissing up for her pictures:

And then her partner said:

"For the LOVE of GOD...are you FINISHED with the photos, yet?"I told her to quit complaining.

Gheesh, it is not every duck that gets to be featured in my blog. She should feel lucky!

  2. In the second and third photos, you can see just a hint of the color to come. And I love the prissy preening photo. Just wonderful, again, as usual. I am in awe, Joan, of your photos. I used to live in Flint some lifetime ago, and I remember driving up to the U.P. in the fall to see the most incredible colors I've ever seen in my life...

  4. That is one very large amount of snow. Wow! I remember driving through that area so long ago, but we took the road that went to the north of Lake Michigan. We didn't know what we were doing. We were headed for Macinac Island. Beautiful shots and love the duck. She was posing for you. Great blog. Oh yes, I used the post options at the bottom and I posted ahead of myself so it didn't look like it was gone. You just change the date to a future date and it will post it later for you. I have too many locals that I didn't really want to know that I was gone.

  7. Lovely!! Have you thought of maybe putting together a calendar to sell? Or some greeting cards? Your pictures are so beautiful.

  9. What a beautiful place, but I definitely wouldn't want to go there in the winter! WAY to much snow for my liking!

Isn't she the loveliest duck. Her brown eye is darling. Great shots!

  10. Eva: Thanks!

Brian: I really like that one too..the best closeup of a duck I have had so far. Her face is so pretty.

DJan: Thanks! I think our color season rivals any in the New England or Maine area..they really are fantastic and I am looking forward to some photo opps then.

    Blushing: Thanks. I will pop over later to your suggested blog as I am sooo behind in reading my present list of fav blogs..but I will get to it. Any friend of yours is bound to be a friend of mine. :-}

L.D.: I have done that a few times (posted ahead) but lately it is all I can do to post every couple days.
I am still catching up reading the blogs that I haven't had time to read when I have been so busy. Too bad you got mixed up in directions when you came to the U.P....you must come to the Lake Superior shoreline...just keep heading west of Duluth..you will find it. ha

Rainfield: Indeed! There is a story there for sure.

    Alan: thanks! You are welcome to come on all of my blog adventures vicariously. :-}

Lesley: I HAVE thought of it. I will have to ask my fellow blogger Shelly how she got started doing that with her fabulous bird photos, I know she sells things that way.

Grannyann: Thanks so much. I hope to get up there and take some of the roads hanging with colored autumn leaves..they should be magnificent if I hit them during the right lighting.

New England: yes, I liked her face closeup the best so far of all my duck pictures...but I loved the loon ones too. That is what is so fun about photography...a new "favorite" is right around the corner, waiting to happen.

  12. Lake Medora, I just added it to my bucket list, what a wonderful drive that would of been, another post of marvellous pictures my friend, loved them all....Hugs

  13. The ducks are so beautiful, I love the close up shot. I wish I could get that close to the ones in our local park.

I got a kick out of the snow marker. When I lived in Anchorage, which most folks think of as the frozen north, I would watch the weather from the mid west states sometimes. All I could think of was I was glad I didn't live there.

  19. Wanda: Yes, we did. I love it up there.

Bernie: Thanks. They were all fun to take. And the hike was wonderful, although I was a little tired at the end.

SquirrelQueen: We do have harsh winters up here, but the entire rest of the year is worth living here. Even winter has its beauty too.

Sue: yes, I think it is one of the prettiest places to see fall scenes in Michigan.

Mitr: Biking would be great on a motorcycle there, but pedaling one could be dangerous as there are no shoulders..just some pull offs to pull to the side.

Gaston: Thanks so much. It is so nice up there, everything is scenic.

Insanity: It really is beautiful up here. I haven't even started visiting all the waterfalls there are and photographing them yet. But our winters are longgggg and harsh. We try to leave for about 3 or 4 weeks and that makes it better. It is pretty, but we get so much snow and it lasts so long here.

    Riet: That's the truth! But look how cute they are. :-}

  23. Ashley: You would love it here! I can just imagine the wonderful photos you would take if/when you come up! If you do come up, it is known for the color tour up there in the fall, so do it in the fall!

  24. Oh my! Do these pics. ever make me homesick. My dad was born and raised in Ontonagon right on the shore of Lake Superior. I spent all of my growing-up-summers at my grandfather's house. During the warm afternoons we were always in Superior. I loved it - my fondest and most unforgettable memories.

I am currently in AZ but will return to MI - Grand Traverse region - when I retire from teaching May 2011.

  25. Turtlewoman: Yay! You will return to retire in Michigan again...you will have to plan trips back up to the Ontonogan area again. My cousin and her husband run the hardware store there in town. I am so glad you found my blog..please join on as a Follower..I put lots of U.P. pictures on it and of wildlife, too.

  26. Beautiful photos Joan!! I've been through there and have seen that snowfall measuring stick. I wouldn't want to live up there in the winter. Yikes! I have an old photo from Brockway Mountain. Awesome! Brings back memories.

  27. Ginnymo: We get a lot of snow too, but not near what they get up at the Keweenaw Peninsula! I love Brockway Mountain..isn't it awesome?
