Lake, Birds and Sunsets: Part Two

The day after we saw the mature eagle and the beautiful sunsets, we once again headed out to fish a little before sunset.

Again, we were treated to some great sights on the lake.

Here is another fisherman, with some pals trailing him, hoping he would catch some fish too!:

We took our boat out around one of the islands again, hoping to see the Eagle again.

We didn't.

But we DID see THIS!:

If you look close, you will see that it is a YOUNGER eagle, just gettng some of his white feathers!
Here are some more shots of him:

Did you see the few white feathers starting to come in on his chest?

The following shot is even funnier. The young eagle is looking back over his shoulder, so you can see the back of his head.

It looks like he has a bald spot doesn't it?
Maybe that is why they call them BALD eagles!!!
You can clearly see the white feathers coming in to replace his now brown head!:

And you can see he has white armpits in this shot!:

By now, he is giving us the "big staredown". He was saying: "Ok, enough pictures of me! I don't like photos of me in "my awkward stage". Come back when I have all my white feathers, will ya'?":

So, on we went.
We fished until sunset.
No bites.
But I was happy to get more Eagle pictures.
To me, THAT was the catch of the night.
Here is one more shot of that orange sunset over the lake from the night before:

And, before we left to go out on the lake,
we had two visitors
at home.

This little guy had been buzzing my lillies all day long:

And then stopped and rested.
Right on my TV digital antenna.
(It was okay by me!)
Because "The Hummingbird Show" is my favorite thing to watch, anyhow!:

So, before I leave you today, I just wanted to give you ONE more shot of that orange sunset.
Because I probably took 100 photos of it.
Who could blame me???

  10. Great shots! Sunsets are always good. I like the one with the eagle spreading its wings. And I think that's the first time I've seen a hummingbird resting.

  11. Having watched the eagle cam in British Columbia, I know that is a recently fledged eaglet. He'll have his (or her) dark feathers for a couple of years. Those pictures are just so enjoyable. Fledging is one of those times in an eagle's life that 50% don't make it through. This guy is on his way! And those hummingbird pictures!! So fantastic. Aren't birds wonderful???

  12. Hi Joan, am still in awe of these beautiful pictures, I could look at them forever.....why not e-mail samples to different magazine publisher's and see if they have an interest in using them for an article.....I'm sure many like, Home & Gardens, Fishing magazines, just go through the stand at any book store, pick out the magazine you think may be interested and write down the publisher's e-mail address....it certainly is worth a try to get you started. I have never seen better photo's anywhere than what you have to offer. Would love to have a couple in frames in my own home. Has to be some way...you could even start a home business and set up a web site to sell them, I know I would be a customer as would almost anyone who have had the joy of seeing them. Didn't mean to ramble....only trying to think of a way to display your wonderful photographs........:-) Hugs

  14. Great pics! We've got hummers by the guzillions here... almost to drive me to bankruptcy keeping 'em fed.

  15. Sandi: You can spend all day on my blog, no problem! I'd be happy to have you here. :-}

Ratty: I was lucky on the trigger with the spreading his wings shot. We were on a boat with lots of waves, so it was VERY hard to keep the zoom steady while the boat was going up and down! And then he flapped his wings..I would've gotten both wings wide open, but because the boat moved, I only got the end when he closed one wing.

DJan: thanks for the education on the eaglet....he is soooo big and gorgeous, I have to believe he will "make it"..I will be going out on the boat for a few more weeks or so and I will keep my eye open for him. By chance, do you know why only 50% make it? Who is their predator? (or is it because of poor health?)

Bernie: You are so kind and such a motivator for me. I do have a list of magazines and photography stock companies that I may investigate selling my photos to this winter, when things slow down a bit (I take less photos in the winter, so I will have more time then). I am also going to try to locally enlarge a few and make sure they are clear in 11 X 14 size or so and if they are, I may frame a few and see if they sell locally. My husband makes frames that are really pretty, so between the two of us, maybe we can try and sell some. I would rather sell them to magazines though. If you like a particular one, please let me know which one. I would love to give you one which you can get framed if it comes out clear when I get them enlarged.

Catherine: I had to take that through our window, so I wasn't sure if it would turn out...but he is so cute just sitting there! I love his little feet hanging on!

Cowguy: I make my own hummingbird food....it is quite reasonable..just boil one cup of water and add 1/4 c. sugar and keep stirring until all of the sugar dissolves in the boiling water. I add 2 drops of red food coloring, but you don't have to do that step. It just helps me know when the solution is getting low sooner. Oh, one more thing....if the solution gets cloudy after being up, throw it out and make them a new batch, but clean the feeder thoroughly, so no mold is in there to make them sick. But, if you have that many hummers, you won't have any left to get cloudy. ha I love those little birds!!!
Hey, I want to thank you again...I WON SASSY's free CD of your group!!! I am SOOOO excited. Can't wait to hear it!

  18. Joan, my hummingbirds never came back this year. I am so, so sad.

BUT I have YOU to take fantastic photos of them for me! That makes me happy!! :)

  19. Whoa!!! That sunset is breathtaking!! And yes, I can relate to you taking hu!ndred pictures of it. I did the same last night. Pictures yet to come! I wish we had hummingbirds here, all we have is sparrows and Great Tits, but I'm not complaining. I can see why YOU prefer this show. Your eagle "shots" are stunning! ( I always feel a little awkward when I use the word "shot" when I'm referring to a picture of a live being. I guess that's just me being a European? Dunno?

  20. Keats: I can just picture the kids. ha

Boomer: Me too! That's why I can't help but take so many photos of it.

Insanity: Ours left for a while and now they are a ton back. They must have gone off and nested and now we have them AND their babies back.

Jientje: Looking forward to your photos, as I always do!
