Especially ponds.
This year, we have seen a multitude of turtles and frogs. Or maybe toads. Who can tell me how to tell frogs from toads?
I just know that you gotta kiss a lot of frogs/toads? before you find a prince. Since I already found my prince, I am not going to worry about it! :-}
So today's post is a tour of the frogs/toads? we have seen over the last week.
Let's make it simple...for simplicity, I am going to call them all frogs from now on in this post.
First, for those of you that have never seen a tadpole, here you go:
The photo isn't dirty, the pond was a soupy color, full of all kinds of goodies that frogs live in:
We spotted this little guy swimming under the pond's water:
And then we found this bright green frog:
Wanting to also get in the blog, this little guy swam up pretty close to me. Aren't they supposed to be afraid of giants armed with cameras? Maybe he heard that I was going to make him famous by putting him on a blog. Now I get it! He was a Kermit-wanna-be:
This one was sunning on a big rock in the middle of the pond. Who could blame him on a nice summer day?:
This one THOUGHT he was hiding from me. Thank goodness for zoom lens!:
Another shot of the lime green one, with a friend. I am afraid the one on the left does not win any beauty contests in my opinion. Perhaps a nose job?:
He let me take about 10 shots of him really close and only blinked at me as if to say: Are you done yet???:
I will post those pictures in a few days.
Oh yeah...we also saw a partridge doing a mating dance (just for me!) and a turkey vulture too.
Wow...I've got some more blog posts to get ready for you!
So much to do....so little time.....
Basically, toads live on land, frogs in the water. I have a toad on my Muskoka page. The toad skin is dry, with apparent warts (they are NOT!). If you pick up a toad they usually pee all over you. Toads have a secretion - when a dog picks them up, they tastes bad!
ReplyDeleteThe frog skin is moist. The shouldn't really be picked up as we have chemicals in our skin that can put bad things on frog skin.
Both begin as tadpoles, live like fish, then they develop legs, and begin to breathe air. Here is a video I made while showing my granddaughter the tadpoles in the pond.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu4GtW4c9vU
Wonderful pics. I love frogs. Hope the skeeters weren't bad.
ReplyDeleteRemember the show Fantasy Island? The place where they filmed the house isn't too far from me. There's a small lake in front that has ducks, geese, swans, fish...and frogs. It's a weird combination, in my opinion. lol!
ReplyDeleteI left a message for you about how to get the comment thingie, so go take a look. : )
You know, frogs are not very pretty are they? Your camera gets so close it looks like you can touch them. Did you know there is a frog museum in Eureka Springs Arkansas? That is so full of every type of frog (not real ones) that we laughed ourselves to tears. Great pics.
ReplyDeleteAwesome frogs, great photos. And I agree the last one is a beauty, glad he posed for you.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the partridge mating dance or the snake (I like snakes). Your photos are always so interesting.
Have a great day,
Judy
Jenn: Thanks for the detailed lesson!
ReplyDeleteI am not going to touch them though, to tell if they are wet or dry. ha
Sue: Luckily it was windy, so I only got a few bites. Little buggers!
JJ: thanks, I won't get to checking out the comment thing until I get back from a 3 day trip I am going on tomorrow, but I will look into it. Thanks for letting me know so quick!
Grannyann: That museum would probably give me a case of the giggles too. They are all so funny looking!
SquirrelQueen: It will be a few days until I can post them because I am going out of town for 3 days...but I will do them when I get back. Until then I "prescheduled" some other articles, with no pictures for a few days.
Check again soon...they'll be coming!
The kermit frog is interesting, as is the one who posed for you. I was wondering, though, what is that gross muddy looking area next to the kermit guy? Ewww! I guess it all looks a little, well, slimy!! I'll try to be more open to slime. :-)
ReplyDeleteCute frogs. I could almost kiss them ;)
ReplyDeleteYa need to explain to us about the pat doing a mating dance just for you....hmmmmm????? Were you wearing a feathered bonnet??
ReplyDeleteNice shots! Enjoy your time away!
DJan: Hey, slime to a frog is like the Hilton to us. ha
ReplyDeleteLoree: You just think one will turn into a prince!
Cathy: I had red on..that is the only thing we could think of. My husband was in the car laughing. He said he has never seen a Pat do THAT with a person who is by them. Maybe my perfume??? Ha
Great frog pictures! I keep waiting for my own frog pictures, but all I see are toads. I disturbed several frogs sitting beside a swamp pond the other day, but all I got to see were the splashes as they jumped into the water.
ReplyDeleteAren't forest creatures awesome??!!?
ReplyDeleteI just love walking through the woods and finding these little guys and just listening to the sounds these little critters give off.
Great pictures and post. Looking forward to seeing more.
Ratty: Yes, they are usually pretty shy. That day, for some reason, they were very relaxed and curious about the crazy camera lady (me!) :-)
ReplyDeleteMichelle: YES, I love going out and getting them on camera! There will be plenty more coming!
