Some Hummers!

Since I have learned a LITTLE during my one day photography class, I have been playing with shutter speed.

What better to practice on, but hummingbirds????

My goal was to capture them in "freeze frame" in some photos and in "blurred" flight in some others. I need to still practice on lighting effects, etc. but one thing at a time.

So, here are a bunch of photos I took of my little hummers at my feeders.

I would have loved to catch one in my apple blossoms, but I have not been able to be close enough to them when it occurs.

So, here is the result of my experimentation!:

  1. Those are some really great pictures. That one where it looks like the bird is suspended in mid air is great. You can't even see his wings at all. You did good on your experiments. They are a neat bird.

  6. Grannyann: Thanks! They were so fun to take photos of!

DVM's Wife:I love them..I could photo them all day long.

MommaYoung: It is a Panasonic Lumix digital with 18X optical zoom and 10 megapixels. Love this camera!

Teresa: Yes, but it was only a one day class and it is over. I have contacted the instructor to see if I can have a private class, one on one with her and she is going to set up a time. I will learn so much more that way!

Wanda: They sure go thru the liquid..I have to make new stuff every week, they go thru it in 6-7 days! But it is worth it to get the amount of entertainment I get out of watching them and photographing them.

  13. Beautiful photos of the hummers, your technique is excellent.

I seem to be stuck in the flower mode lately but sometime this week I am going to post some of my bee photos. I love your page layout, this is what I have been working on for my photo blog. I will probably go live with it later this week. The larger photos show so much more detail.

Thanks for following, I just did the same.

    Have a wonderful Sunday.

  15. Mother Goose: Thanks so much, what a nice compliment!

Mouthy: I am always amazed when I look at the photos too, because when I am taking them I don't see the detail in the birds either. They are amazing little creatures.

Joanie: I think it was luck this time round..I took several pictures to get those good ones, but I am learning!

Cathy: Thanks so much...that is a wonderful compliment coming from the Bird Whisperer with a camera of a zillion zoom capability. LOL

Chicamom: Thanks...I had such fun trying to "freeze frame" them...they zoom in so quickly like a bumble bee and fly off as quick as they come...you gotta be quick on the button, let me tell you!

Judy: Thanks so much. I am working hard to learn about photography. I really like my new hobby.

Squirrel Queen: Thanks so much..glad I found your blog too. Your flower photos were so pretty...I will look forward to your larger layout too.

Insanity Kim: Yes, you must get this camera for your 35th..just paste pictures of the camera all over your house, car etc. for your hubby to get the hint. ha I got a good buy on Amazon.com and it came in less than 3 days...go for it!!!

  16. I've never really been a bird-watcher, but I must admit, your pictures make me look more closely at the birds in my garden to see what kind they are. Problem is, as they're not used to being stared at, but ignored, they're getting a bit spooked. Hopefully, they'll relax.

  17. CONGRATULATIONS on these wonderful photos. They are great. We have our feeder up but so far we haven't seen any hummingbirds. I am encouraged to see them when they do come because I have never seen one in the feather before. We don't have humming birds in England you see.
    Blessings, Star

  19. Fran: The birds here are used to it, because I am forever clicking photos around them !

Star: You don't have hummingbirds in England? I guess I didn't know that!
You MUST see them in person...they are amazing. When you are outside they sound like huge bumblebees flying past you...and their wings flutter so fast to the naked eye that you can barely see their wings.

Shellmo: Thanks so much...that is quite a compliment coming from you...you take such gorgeous photos!

  20. You got great shots! I've only ever seen one hummingbird. That was just last week before I started playing with my camera settings. I only got a shadow in my picture.

  21. You must've learned a lot in one day. They're great, you even got were able to capture the wing. I'm going to have to figure that out somehow. Great pictures!

  28. Wow. Just...wow. Seriously, what a privilege to get those great shots. I hope you can make millions with your photos.

  29. Ratty: They are SO fast when they fly around...they zip by you like a fast bumblebee and then they are gone...I had to be pretty fast on the trigger of the camera, even when they buzzed up to the feeder!

JJ: I bet you did...I know about you...you are into butts...I remember "Mr. Tight Buns" came from YOU!!!
    :-D

Gardener: Thanks! That was my goal..to get at least ONE where I could get a shot with the wings "frozen" in flight!

Bernie: Thanks so much. I don't know about ME being a natural...but the hummingbirds are sure natural beauties!

Dreamwalker: Nope..none of those hummers...I agree: these "hummers" are a LOT prettier!

Cedar: I would love to catch a picture of them in my garden someday too...at least in the feeder I knew if I was patient enough and waited long enough, they would come there where I could get their picture!

Rural Rambler: Thanks! Yes, I loved seeing their tiny feet tucked way up under them when I looked at the photos too...it is so nice to do macro shots, because you see things your naked eye doesn't catch!

Bemused: They were actually coming to my hummingbird feeder...I would love to catch them actually in my garden flowers someday too!

Lynn: Thanks...I am thrilled to be warming up here too and able to go out and catch the flowers and birds outside!

Kearsie: I have never entered a contest yet...but I am thinking of doing so this winter (entering some contests or selling some for stock pictures). I would be thrilled to sell some. Wanna be my agent?

  31. Roshni: Thanks so much. It was such fun trying to capture them in "freeze frame" because they move SOOOOOO fast!

  32. Great job! They look really good, they whizz by me so fast, I can understand the patience it must take to get these photos! :)
