Sold !!!

We have owned a small cabin on a river named the Chocolay River in Marquette County for over 10 years. It is quite rustic, with an outdoor toilet and only a small pump for water inside.
It did have electricity, a small refrigerator and stove and a wood fireplace by the time we got it somewhat fixed up. We used to go there on weekends when I was still working and do some fishing and just plain relaxing. It was very beautiful and quiet there. My husband saw a silver fox and we would frequently see deer and mallard ducks on the river too. The fishing was good too.

Since we built our log home, which is over an hour away from this river property, we hadn't spent much time there. It got to be a burden in the summer to have to go and cut grass there and worry about someone breaking into the cabin.

So, last fall, we listed the property for sale with a realtor friend of mine. I didn't think it would sell quickly because when the snow came (early up here) it would take someone snowshoeing in to see the property. Also, since the cabin is not insulated well enough for people to use it in the winter, it wouldn't sell well at that time of year.

As soon as the snow melted, I decided to list it also on Craig's List.

Wow.

We had 6 or 7 people really interested and I began to receive a bunch of e-mails of inquiry about the property.

Within one week of listing it on Craig's List, someone from downstate Michigan drove up to look at it this Saturday, and offered us the full asking price, in cash! So, we got ahold of our realtor and we did the purchase agreement yesterday morning.
If all goes well, we will close within the next 7-14 days and it will be a done deal.
Hopefully, this is a good sign that the economy is starting to improve.

We will miss our little rustic cabin on the river, and are so pleased that the family that purchased it appreciates its charm and beauty. They seemed absolutely thrilled to get the property.

Here are some photos of the cabin:

First, this is the walk over bridge to get into the property:

This is a shot of the river, taken off of the bridge:

This is right in front of the cabin. You could practically cast your fishing pole into the river from the front door:

This is looking up river from the cabin's front door:

A shot of the living area of the rustic cabin. On cooler days, we would light up the red fireplace in the corner and snuggle up on the couch and watch the fire:

The little kitchen area of the cabin:

We sold it with all the contents, as seen in the photo. We didn't want to haul any of the furniture and kitchen supplies, etc. out.

We were a little sad to see it go, as we had a lot of memories of having fun in it, but we were so pleased that the family buying it loves it and were thrilled to get it. We will have more time to spend out on our boat (on our lake) because we won't have the caretaking of this little cabin to worry about any longer.

  4. Momma Young: The cabin was pretty rustic and none of the furniture matched, but the land was gorgeous. It was on a peninsula with the river surrounding the cabin on all 3 sides.

Mystery Lady: We loved it when we used to use it. The river is so peaceful.

Scrappy Do: Thanks. We were a little sad to see it go out of our lives, but now someone new will appreciate it and create their own memories at it.

JJ: The inside was full of unmatched, old stuff, but it was cozy and fun!

Insanity Kim: You are welcome. I didn't even think of showing pictures of the river cabin on my blog until we are now selling it..then I realized I had better show them now because we won't own it any more!

  10. The cabin is gorgeous and you must be very sad to see it go to someone else. I can understand though, that you will be glad you don't have the maintenance to do to it all the time and then there's the wintertime. Good luck with your new project. We always have to give one thing up to get something else, don't we.
    Blessings, Star

  11. What a cozy little cabin, and the river and land look beautiful. You must have had many great times there. I can see my husband and I eating a good country breakfast in the kitchen(wishing...)

  12. Ooh it is a beautiful little cabin. I have always had a dream of retiring in a small little log cabin, on the banks of a stream or river, and spend the days watching nature.
    I should have looked on C/L :)
I'm sure the people who are the new owners will spend many happy times there.

  15. So happy that your cabin sold, it sure looks like a beautiful spot to relax at, but as you say it now gives you more time to enjoy your boat. Not much use to you if you weren't using it and to find a family that will use it, priceless.....:-) Hugs

  16. My husband and I had a cabin in Baraga on the Sturgeon. It became a burden-our days up there were spent mowing, etc. Now that we sold it, we miss it terribly. Life! Your pics brought me back to it....thank you.

  17. It would be hard to get rid of that property but the photos you have shared of your home would make it very understandable why you wouldn't want to leave your new home to spend time elsewhere. Congrats!

  18. Not to mention a little more cash in your bank account. Interesting you sold this on Craig's List. I have heard of it, but didn't know property/homes could sell on there. Congrats on selling it so quickly. Cute place!

  19. Wow! That is amazing that Craig's List worked so well. Judging from the pictures, I can see why you will miss your charming cabin. But, as you say, you'll have so much time now for other fun stuff!!

  20. Star: Yes. We are trying to "gear down" a little. Besides our log home on the lake, we own two OLD houses right across the street that we are renovating. So that means having to also mow those lawns, etc. We are crazy, I know! ;-D

Vagabonde: Breakfast at the cabin was a little more rustic...meant pumping water, boiling it to wash dishes, etc. But it was like camping, which always is fun for a LITTLE while. ha

Brit: You wouldn't have been able to retire at that little cabin as it wasn't insulated enough in Michigan for our cold, hard winters. But maybe if we had transplanted it to Tennessee, you could use it more. ha

Far Side: I told my husband what you said about the fish hooks. He didn't laugh as hard as I did!
    LOL :-D

Loree: Thanks! I think the new owners will take better care of it then we have had time for over the last 3 years...they already brought a rake and other supplies out the day we signed the purchase agreement!

Bernie: Yep. It was the perfect win-win situation.
And we can use the money to help us finish renovating the two old houses across the street...I am planning on opening an Antiques and Collectables Shop in one of them next year, so this helps my goal of doing so.

Sue: Where do you live? We know Baraga and the Sturgeon WELL...my hubby graduated from L'Anse! Tell me more about how you know Baraga!!

Cathy: Thanks. It was lovely, but got to be such a worry when we couldn't get out to check it more or mow the area, etc. We are still working on the two old houses across the street, so we needed to gear down a bit!

DVM's Wife: The cash will flow thru our fingers right into the two houses across the sreet that we are renovating...but we needed the cash to complete those projects, so it really is a win-win!

  21. Photos are fantastic! Paid in cash, huh, watch out for the smell of meth or crack or whatever, LOL!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gaston: Thanks! Actually, although he said he'd pay in cash, we are going thru my realtor for the paperwork, etc. ha He meant he wouldn't have to get a loan or have us wait for that approval, etc.
I say: Show me the money! ha. We are supposed to close before 13 more days...so hopefully nothing will "fall through"!!

  23. You SOLD this? Aarrrgghh! Have you not been taking your medication, Retired One?....

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fran: yes, we sold it (we have the purchase agreement signed and it should close within 13 days). Thank goodness I don't take any medication...maybe I should? ha We enjoyed it and now it is someone else's turn. We love being on the lake now and haven't been using the river property for quite some time...only worried about it and had to go mow it all summer. This will make us feel free=er!!! :-D

  25. i am just smitten! I dream of properties like that, all rustic. Sigh, some day I can live out my hermit fantasy....

  26. Maniacal Mommy: There are alot of properties like that around here...we are lucky...but not all of them are on water. We were lucky to have had this one (with water on all 3 sides). I will miss it, but I love our log home on the lake more.

  27. I love this cabin! So beautiful, quaint - and the views are wonderful! And it's nice to be on a river! I can see why it sold so quickly! Everyone needs their own piece of heaven!

  28. wow! I would like to spend time in it too..in summer!!

  29. Shellmo: It is a cute cabin on a wonderful river peninsula. It is supposed to close within the next 12 days, barring no problems..and we don't expect any problems. I have to look to the future and think of happily using the money towards the development of my upcoming Antique shop, which will be the next adventure of life. ha

Roshni: You are right on there....the summer is wonderful there....I never went there either in the winter!
