More Lake Michigan Ice!

Although we are melting in the north now (at the time you read this), a few weeks ago, when we went to meet Shelley( from Birding in Michigan and Building a Log Cabin), down in Mackinaw City, Michigan,
Lake Michigan had plenty of dramatic ice.

I wanted to share how dramatic things are on the Great Lakes, even in the late winter!

Just look at THIS!:

These are all ICE CHUNKS that the wind pushed up against the Lake Michigan shoreline!:
I loved the hint of turquoise in the ice chunks!

I had to take pictures of the boats in the winter....on the shore...just waiting for spring!:

Like US, these boats are up on dock, high and dry (in cold storage)...waiting for the ice to melt so they can get back to being in the summer waters!:

The boats are all up on the dock, asking: "Will Spring EVER get here?":

The Mighty Mackinac Bridge "on ice":
See how hard the wind was blowing? (Look at the flag). I was freezing out there taking that photo!

Mountains of gorgeous turquoise ice on the Lake Michigan shore!:

I wanted to climb them SO bad!...But I probably would have had a tragic death:

Ice under the bridge!:

The cold and forelorn shore even has a beauty all it's own:

By the time you see this post, most of our snow is already melting.

But I took so many winter photos during the first few weeks of March, that I will be posting even more of them in the next few days.

*If you haven't entered my March photo contest yet, PLEASE remember to enter your photo by midnight, March 31st. The theme this month is:
"Something GREEN or Something Irish"
Follow the rules listed HERE.

Man that looks cold.
great photos. I live the last one the best. The leafless tree adds to the starkness of the shot...brrr

I feel the need to don a sweater! Beautiful, if cold, photos!

GORGEOUS pictures! I never knew the ice would come on to the shore. I just thought it melted in the water. Very interesting thing to learn.
That dock has to be super strong to hold all those boats.

Oh! You got a new header! Since I read in RSS feed, I don't always come to visit.

Your ice dams reminded me of a friend who lived on Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron) and every spring would get his house flooded. But he never moved because he loved living there the other 11 months.

Eva: Thanks, Sweetie!

Misslynda: thanks so much...yes I loved seeing those boats all plopped up on top of the dock...very unusual and cool to see!

GoingLikeSixty: What do you MEAN..you don't stop by my blog often!!?? Well, you know you gotta stop by MORE often, now right??? Make sure you do!

It was so worth your freezing to get the picture of the bridge off in the distance and the flag straight out.

Here we are, praying that no freezes come along and take the bloom off our fruit trees!!! Hope your warmth gets there soon!

Yet more gorgeous shots of the Mackinaw Bridge area. I am in the works of planning a trip to Antigo, WI to try and see a friend from college. Definitely going to be going through the UP either on the way there or on the way back. Will have to try to meet up with you, getting to know the people I know through blogging would be so much fun.

The blue tint in the ice is beautiful! Chilling but beautiful! Brr ... today again we woke to single digits but next week is supposed to be warm again. :)

I never imagined ice would build up in such a way...except maybe in the Artic! It is a beautiful color. I'm wondering just how do they place the boats up on the docks.

Hi Joan, As usual, your pictures are marvelous. I love that one of the bridge with the flag in it. Wow!!!!

The turquoise ice reminds me of the ice my son saw when he lived in Alaska for a couple of years. He sent pictures of the ice from there. Beautiful!!!

Have a great weekend.
Hugs,
Betsy

Bernie: Thanks! I don't know why but if I post using my MAC computer the print is smaller using the new Blogger Format. I will watch that from now on....thanks for letting me know it was tiny before on the last post...I went back and fixed it...

Roshni: thanks so much! Ice formations and scenes can be so beautiful if you can brave the cold to go out and get them. Luckily our weather is warming up.

Brian: I LOVE it when you say the photos are beautiful. ha

TechnoBabe: Yes it was worth it...luckily my hubby was in the car and as soon as I got back in we put the heat on super high so I could get over my chills and warm my hands back up. ha

Sandi: It is supposed to hit in the 60's next week here. YIPPEE!

Cathy: It has been normal, crazy U.P. weather...three weeks of abnormally warm, then three days of freezin' ass cold...now the forecast tonight says it will be in the 60's on this coming Tuesday and Wednesday!! ha My tulips are up about 4 inches so I hope we get some warmth back, for sure!

Christy: I hope you do! We have to go to Florida for the birth of a grandchild in about three weeks, so I hope you come up before or after that so we can meet...that would be wonderful!!

Cher: Same here...we had really nice weather for a few weeks and this morning it was 9F degrees! Yikes..now the weather forecast is for in the 60's next week.

Wanda: They had a huge crane there...I wish I could have seen them when they did it but I assumed that is how they got them up there.

Betsy: Thanks so much! I would LOVE to go to Alaska for photo opps...it is on my "wish list". :-}

What a lovely set of photos again, I loved the boats, I don't think I've seen dry storage before. I don't think we need to do that in Belgium, we never get thaty amount of ice!
Thanks for the reminder of the photo contest,I almost forgot! Time flies doesn't it?

The Retired One said...

Jientje: Thanks! I always love all the boat pictures you show in your blog, too!

Yep, it does look cold. Some great shots, but that's what I expect from you when I come over here. Glad you haven't met with a tragic death, but I can't get out of my mind the amount of time you spend looking through a camera lens: watch your step! :-)

The Retired One said...

DJan: It has warmed up some and by next week, they are even promising in the 60F's!! Yay! yes, I do spend a lot of time behind the lens..it is my new passion since retirement, and I am loving it because it gets me outside hiking and in the fresh air.

Wow, does that look cold!!! Great pictures, but cold!

I really like the lake ice. I used to go down to the Detroit River to look at all of the ice on it, but I haven't had a chance to see the best of it in years.

Those photos are just stunning... The chunks of ice have an exquisite beauty! Hurray for winter beauty!

The Retired One said...

Otin: It was really cold the day I took those...the wind was whipping off the lake at about 40 mph!

Ratty: This year, it was probably too warm on the Detroit River, due to El Nino, right?

Ladyfi: thanks so much!

Great photos, that last one is a gorgeous scene and I love the bridge and flag. All of the ice does remind me of living in Alaska.

Insanity: Thanks, honey..yes I love the new layout too...it just seemed so "me" when I saw the rocks and water.

SquirrelQueen: Thanks so much...I would LOVE to go to Alaska someday too.

That turquoise ice reminds me of the glacier near my hometown in Alaska. It's so pure and pretty!

The top on that lighthouse reminds me of the one on the Split Rock lighthouse. It is a beauty. I remember going to Mackinaw Island years ago. It was so fun.

The Retired One said...

Kearsie: I hope to see some glaciers in person someday, it is on my wish list!

LD: I worked on Mackinac Island as a maid one summer when I was in high school...a spectacular place!!
