This is the last of my series on the beautiful headstones and nature park
that is
Bonaventure Cemetery
in
Savannah, Georgia.
If you ever get the chance to go there, I recommend it.
It is a nature walk, an art museum
and a place to reflect on life and death.
It is especially poignant to me as I write this blogpost today
because I lost two friends to death, very unexpectantly a few weeks ago.
One was a man who I worked with for years and he died of an unexpected massive heart attack
when visiting downstate to pack up his daughter and her belongings from college..he was only 58.
One was my 63 yr. old girlfriend who was very, very active in organizing art shows
in our area, and she possessed a spirit that cannot be squelched...she died of a totally unexpected
massive aneurysm. She was cremated, but if I could, I would get her a headstone like one of these beautiful ones I have shown you in these past posts.
Treasure life..it is so precious.
Treasure friends and family..they are irreplaceable.
Quite the monument:
This ENORMOUS archway/headstone sat right on the river waters!:
The carved detail in it was undescribable!:
Jesus statue on the arch:
Amongst all the grandeur and huge, decorated headstones
was this simple grave:
And this HEARTBREAKING one, the loss of TWO babies:
A sad, sad angel:
I loved, loved the Spanish moss growing on
this headstone:
Rose carvings:
Gorgeous:
Many family plots had ornate, wonderful gates and fences around them:
Like the gates into heaven!

Oh WOW ! Awesome photos ! Looks like royalty was layed to rest there with the big head stones! The dates are what I find facinating, strange but I like going to old graveyards and reading the headstones the history just draws me in ! Have a great day !
that archway is so cool...it totally would of been our time portal as kids...and the babies one is way sad...
Beautiful statuary but poignant in that they commemorate the death of even tiny loved ones.
So sorry to hear of the loss of your friends. Both so suddenly too. The headstones are so old and beautifully carved. The sad angel is a lovely sculpture.
what beautiful artwork!
I have so much enjoyed the bonaventure series, i am sad to see it end. once again you have magnified the details on these stones and made them show as the works of art they are. the angel looks like she is about to cry. great job, what is NEXT? more savannah? hope so
sorry to hear about your friends, both of them were young to leave this earth.
I don't think that I have ever seen that sad of angel before now and you are right, they did depict the popular view of heaven's gates. Neat shots.
These are so amazing. The costs involved must be phenomenal.Sorry to hear of the loss of your friends.
Joan, they are all lovely...it's the first time (if it goes through) that I've been able to comment on your blog lately because it keeps kicking me out: UGH!!! so I'm going against the clock and hoping I can post...
your photos are lovely and I am so sorry to hear of your friends passing; it is never easy, is it?
Okay, here goes...
I am so glad you took the time to share so many pictures with us. The artistry is simply beautiful. I have enjoyed it so.
I can't believe a cemetery could be so beautiful. You're right it is more like an art museum.
I loved the post and your pictures are beautiful as always.
Have a great weekend!
Thanks again, Joan, for all of the Bonaventure Cemetery pictures. There are some fabulous sculptures n there... The 'sad' angel is gorgeous.. But--they ALL are. Thanks!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
