Stormy Skies over Duluth...

As you read this, I am probably partying with my best buddies during our reunion weekend. (Read yesterday's post). I pre-scheduled this blogpost, because I knew I would be too busy to post today.

As I mentioned last week, we went to Duluth, Minnesota a few weeks ago to visit my husband's sister and husband and to attend a surprise birthday party for my cousin, Amy.

While there, we had the pleasure of going down to Canal Park.

This area is along the waterfront of Lake Superior and has a variety of nice restaurants and shops, in addition to some lighthouses and lift bridges.

The skies were perfect for photography: dark, stormy and moody...and then the sun came out to hightlight the historical landmarks and buildings. Who could ask for more?

So, here are some photos I hope you enjoy, which I took while we were in Duluth:

Here is a liftbridge for large boats....I thought the sky behind it was really nice!:

You can walk all the way out to this lighthouse on a nice cement walkway:

The dark, stormy sky beckoned me to take this photo!:

This one was taken from the lighthouse walkway, looking back at Duluth:

Look at how the sun lit up the lighthouse against the stormy skies!:

Yet another lighthouse!:

They have horse and buggy rides available at Canal Park to tour the area:

This one was taken at Hawk's Ridge, which overlooks north Duluth:

The storm was moving in closer. But, we never got the threatening downpour:

If you ever get the chance to visit Duluth, there is enough to keep you busy for the weekend. There is a wonderful rose garden, a railroad museum, mansions to tour, Canal Park and beautiful shores of Lake Superior. It is a smaller "big" town, easy to navigate.

I love the pictures of the stormy skies. They feel filled with promise, even if the promise isn't exactly, well, calming. Great shots.

Hope you're having a wonderful time, and I look forward to the pictures!

It's amazing how photographs can take us to the place and make us feel that we are really THERE. Wonderful sky! And that red roof together with the blue and white colors looks stunning! Watching a sky - this is exactly what I was doing when that big salmon grabbed my line!

This place looks beautiful. I love the place with the bridge. I like bridges. The lighthouses are great too, and lighthouses are some of my favorite things. It's strange, for somebody that has a fear of deep water, I sure do like things associated with it.

Blushing: You are welcome...I love taking pictures of stormy skies AND lighthouses, so this was a wonderful opportunity to do both.

DJan: Everyone just left our house, and yes, we had a fantastic time!
Pictures will be coming...

Brian: The reunion was everything we hoped it would be..thanks! yes, I loved taking these photos in Duluth.

June: Yes, stormy skies on Lake Superior are a common site and the lighthouses are there are as a reminder!

Gaston: Me too. It isn't as cold as it looks in the photos...it was kind of balmy out. But the clouds looked pretty threatening while we were there...

Grannyann: Glad you liked the photos! I loved taking them.

Tatyana: I am behind on my reading of everyone's blogs...can't wait to hear your story about the fish grabbing your line!

Lotusleaf: Yes, I loved the dark, dark skies against the red roof too, and how it reflected on the water. Thanks!

Ratty: I was on land the whole time I took the photos, so no fear. ha

Rainfield: Glad you liked them!

Julie: Reunion is over..it was fantastic, thanks. I will post photos soon..:-P

Wow, you had a great evening light to give you fantastic pictures. I have to admit that I hit a setting on the camera, so all our pictures turned blue. I have to manipulate them to get them to look natural. You were there in the evening while I was crossing the border into Iowa. I love that place and your pictures made me homesick for the place. We may go back in the fall.

L.D.: I took a ton more, but didn't want to bore my readers with too many pictures of the lake and lighthouses. ha
yes, we return often too...my husband's sister lives there, so we see it often. Hope to maybe get back there when autumn colors look their best and get some shots, howeverthat is the best time here too, so I may stay around here instead and take some wood's shots!

Hmm, I guess my comment got lost. It's was a good one too. ; ) I was in Duluth last Sept/Oct and LOVED the this place! My cousin and I walked to the lighthouse then ate at Grandma's. Afer, we drove up to Two Harbors and stopped at Gooseberry Falls. It was great!

Fantastic pics - they made me feel even sadder (not always a bad thing, right)

Sara: Small world, right? Maybe someday we can coordinate a meeting there???

JJ: We ate at Grandma's when we were there too!

Dreamwalker: Don't get sad when you look at the photos! Be in wonder of Mother Nature and its splendor!~

Your lighthouse photos are amazing. I am in awe of this area. I would love to visit here. What a wonderful photo opportunity at the time of darkened skies... it only enhances that awesome lighthouse!

Michele: Thanks so much. You would love the area if you come and visit it. I was excited when the sun came out against the dark skies, because I have always loved photos with this effect.
