Fiddlesticks!! Crap!! Oh, Mon Dieux, and all those other Expletive Deletives!!!!!

Today I have good news and bad news (at least that is the way I look at it).

First of all, we were heading to town to do some business. I always take my camera with us now, because I have learned that we can sometimes spot a hawk or a rainbow or any surprise when we least expect it.

So as we were chatting in the car, up ahead I see a bunch of ravens on the side of the road, down a little embankment.

I turn to my husband and said: "I bet there is road kill....a deer or something down there...because look at all the ravens.".

I no sooner say that and we are exactly at the spot on the highway and I look up to see a gigantic EAGLE right there! I yell at my husband: "STOP the car! I gotta get a picture of that beautiful eagle!" So he does and I grab my camera case and camera out, take the lens cap out and fiddle with the buttons....

NOTHING~! Black!!

I swear!

He now has gotten the car back to where the eagle is still there, standing magestically.

I fumble and try the camera buttons again.

Then. I. realize.

Last night, before I went to bed, I had removed THIS:

Oh, yes.

It was my Panasonic battery pack.

Still at home, plugged in and recharging.

I could have cried. So, I lament and go on and on about how stupid I was not to check that I had everything in the camera before we left, etc. My poor husband is trying to console me....telling me that we have seen a lot of eagles this year and he is SURE we will get another chance again soon....and reminding me that we went out in the woods yesterday and got some terrific shots, etc. etc.

So, okay...I finally get over it and remind myself to ALWAYS check my camera before I take in anywhere in the future. I chuck my camera and case in the back seat of the car, and we go on our way.

But wait.

It gets WORSE.

On the way home, we are laughing again about my blunder.

And up ahead, there are 4 cars pulled over on the highway.

I tell my husband: "Oh, oh, maybe there was an accident or something?"

I see a woman kneeling down on the shoulder, like she is taking a photo of something.

I get a sick feeling in my stomach.

We stop the car....and to my right, within a STONE's throwing distance..................is......................

TWO beautiful HUGE gorgeous MOOSE standing in the woods.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Son of a b....tch!.........................................................................................

I have been waiting my entire life to see a moose up here AND to capture it on film.

Let's just say.........................I was thrilled to see them, but SICK that I had a nonfunctioning camera to capture them.

Let's just say...
today was not a good day to buy lotto tickets!!!

Anyway, to make ME feel better, I am going to post some things we DID see and capture yesterday when we went into the U.P. spring woods....

First, before we left home, we saw a visitor at the birdfeeder!:

A Rosebreasted Grosbeak:

Then, I told my husband my goal was to find some Trilliums at the end of their life cycle, because they turn pink then and are very pretty. We found a lot of them:

And a simple moth on a dandelion was really fun to capture, too:

We found a pink flowering crab tree at a country cemetary too, that I just HAD to capture on camera:

Now, take a look at THIS photo. Do you see an animal hidden anywhere in it?:
Oh no, the brown you see on the upper left of the photo is NOT the side of a deer.

Here is the photo of it a little closer. See his head? So, what is it?:

A Sandhill Crane! (One of my favorite large birds!):

I would expect to see him in a field or by the water...this one was out in the middle of the woods where they had done some logging nearby. Isn't he huge? And beautiful?:

Later that night, after we got home, we took our usual walk around the neighborhood and down to the lake. We saw another set of geese with their babies:

So, we really had a great day..............................................YESTERDAY!!!!
But of course...that was when I actually had BATTERIES in my camera.....(sigh!).........................

I hate a missed opportunity! Now I carry an ultra compact camera in my purse. Unfortunately, I rarely get out of the house. lol!

Did you have a cell phone with camera capabilities? I do but I don't know how to do it. Guess I better figure it out. I also take my camera with me where ever I go and I have 4 extra batteries in the side pocket. Great pics. That crane is something else.

BUY AN EXTRA SET OF BATTERIES!! And maybe an additional charger. I truly feel for you!! Especially the moose! Do you know what it is like to live in the Moose Capitol of Michigan and never have seen one?? And people always ask "WHERE CAN WE SEE A MOOSE??" Truthfully, TWICE there has been a moose at the prison facility!

Your photos just get better and better!

Your pictures are awesome. I think I asked before but what type of camera do you have?

Sorry your missed the Eagles. I would have loved to see them and the moose.

I feel for you on that missed eagle shot opportunity!!! I would @#$% too! LOL! And then the moose - wow - were you crying? By the way, I've done the "forget to put my camera battery in" too trick and I missed the opportunity to photograph a loon baby riding on top of his mother's back. Sigh..... Anyways - the rest of your photos were gorgeous - exciting to see that crane!!

You missed that but have got another, what a terrific gift. All are my favorite pictures.

To share with you another potential blunder, put back your memory card immediately after you haver done data transfer, ha ha, otherwise, ....

Ugggg!!!!! How frustrating for you! I have a panasonic too, and aren't those battery packs a pain in the rump?!? I miss my cannon when I could just make sure I had a 4 pack of AA's in the glove box at all times... now I'm stuck waiting for this *bleepedybleepbleepin'* battery pack to charge... esp if it's been a couple of weeks between picture taking, cause it looses juice. I'm thankful to even have a camera, but I sure miss the ease of having one that required regular batteries. And, ummm, not to give you a bad time, but what did you do to give you such bad JuJu to see both of those things without your camera? Poor thing. Hope your weekend is MUCH better!

Wow! You do take some wonderful pictures!! My blurry peony shots are pretty sad in comparison!

JJ: I love the quality of my Panasonic camera, so I don't carry any others anymore.

Grannyann: yes,I had my cellphone, but like you, it look me too long to figure it out and the moose went into the woods by then.....I didn't think about it at all when I saw the eagle, either. My camera does not take regular batteries, so I don't carry them with me. I like the battery pack because it holds power a LOT longer than batteries do...I was just stupid because I didn't remember that it was still plugged in the wall when I left this morning. You can bet THAT won't happen again, as I will check everytime I take my camera from now on!

Cathy: My camera does not take regular batteries. I really like the rechargeable pack for it, because it holds a charge for a long long time...I had just taken it out to charge it fully because I knew I had my photography class tomorrow and wanted to get it ready early. That's what I get for trying to be prepared. Screwed. ha
Everyone and their brother up here have seen moose except me. I saw only one moose, way in the distance last year and by the time we turned the car around, it was gone. So I have been lamenting ever since about not being able to see a moose...and then I get the chance and....no working camera. Its ok. I will get over it.
Some. Day. :-D

Carole: I love my camera. It is a Panasonic Lumix. It has an 18X optical zoom and 10 megapixels. It is the best camera I have ever owned and I recommend it to anyone.

Shellmo: Ever since I have seen your pictures of the Eagles, and some other blogger's, I have wanted to get a closeup. Hope I get another chance! We do see them quite a lot on our lake, so I am hoping I can closer to one this summer and get another chance that way. Missing a loon baby riding mamma loon's back? I would STILL be crying too! Glad I am not the only one things like that happen to!!!

Rainfield: I am sure I will do the "forget to replace the memory card" thing too someday. Lord!
I am grateful for the sandhill crane photo from yesterday , though. So, I guess I should stop complaining, right?

Aria: I really don't mind the battery pack, the one with my camera has been really great for the power capacity. It was my own damn fault! I purposely wanted to charge it because I am taking a photography class tomorrow and wanted to make sure to charge it early. (That's what I GET for trying to be prepared like a frickin' girl scout!!!) I DID wonder about my karma though...to have to miss both an eagle AND two moose!!!!! I better be like EARL and figure it out. ha

Maniacal: Thanks so much. I love pictures of any flowers, so don't worry...your peonies pictures are still beautiful to me!

Believe me we've all been there! I've sworn a few times myself when my batteries went dead, or I didn't have my memory card, or the card was full and I saw something really cool.

I'll tell you one thing, you won't forget next time! I think it's how we all learn, but it sure does suck : (

Don't you just hate when that happens? You did get some great pictures though. I really like the Sandhill crane. It does look huge.

dreamwalker said...

Oh, I feel your pain...My solution to that: 2 battery packs. And yeah, the phone camera works, too.

Rick (Ratty) said...

At least you have your memories. I like stories better than pictures a lot of times anyway, and yours is a good one. It reminds me of the things that happen to me with my camera. The pictures you do have are great ones though. The crane is wonderful. And notice the number of goslings. Five. I've been noticing a pattern, seven eggs and five babies that make it.

dreamwalker said...

By the way, I have a tag for you in my blog. :)

Bernie said...

Oh I felt so bad for you as I know pictures of Moose and an eagle from you would of been amazing. I still enjoyed yesterday's pictures very much. I am sure you will have other opportunities to get the pictures you wanted. Thank you for sharing my friend, have a wonderful weekend my friend....:-) Hugs

New England: Yes, hopefully that will NOT ever happen again! I still shake my head in dismay!

Gardener: I was really thrilled to see the sandhill crane up close, so I am happy about that. I am always amazed how big they are when you actually see them up close. Can anyone say "Big Bird"? :-D

Dreamwalker: I never use my phone camera, so it would have taken me several minutes to figure it out and they were gone by then. ha I just have to remember to always check my camera bag and camera every time I leave the house! ha I will go to your blog today to check out the tag. Thanks!

Ratty: That is interesting that they have 7 eggs and usually only 5 make it. I will have to go on my bird website and look up info on them. Did I ever give you the website address? It is the most wonderful site on birds EVER. There are bird videos, their sounds and info on every bird you would ever want to know about. My cousin Jessica sent me the link. Let me know if you want it.

Bernie: Thanks, Bernie. I need all the sympathy I can get (ha). I sure hope you are right about getting more opportunities...I have been waiting for years up here to see a moose. Hope your weekend is wonderful and pain free!

Oh geeze... crappy luck but I have been there before!!
I have missed out on some awesome sights as well and it sucks and no matter how many times people say it's ok, it really does make you feel crappy for quite some time. But at least you did get a glimpse of these beautiful animals.
And I know you will see them again... I do from time to time and actually have driven away because of dangerous road conditions or too many other phtotgraphers taking photos.
I carry 3 cameras plus the one on my phone. I have to, I get so nervous about missing a shot of something now after past experiences and I carry a lot of spare battery packs. Cost me an arm and an leg (make count for the limp I now have) but it does help alleviate the stress of missing wildlife shots.

Beautiful photos of the flowers and birds and I'm looking forward to your future moose photos.

lmao :oD Story of my life!!! I fortunately usually remember my battery, my problem is remembering to charge it... or just generally killing it. I had a baby otter a foot away from me once, and I couldn't get a shot because my battery had died. I feel your pain :o)

I just dropped by to see your blog and was surprised to find the most amazing photo's. Amazing! I sure wish you had of got the picture of the Eagle and the Moose, and I know exactly what you mean about seeing wonderful things to photograph when you don't have your camera. Nice Blog! I love your sense of humor too... : )

It never fails... a streaker runs across my street and my camera battery is dead. I totally feel your pain. I wish we could have seen your eagle and the moose. However, your other photos are totally cute!

The Retired One said...

Michelle: You take such amazing photos...I'd be doubly disappointed if it were you that missed the shots. But it is good to know it happens to others too.

VaBookworm: A baby otter? That must have been adorable. So you DO know how I feel :-D !!
I will just keep shooting photos and pretend it didn't happen. ha

Teresa: Thanks so much. Did you join on as a Follower yet? Would love to have you stop by on a regular basis. I try and post a lot of photos mixed with other articles.

Lynn: I will be waiting to see that streaker of yours..it would be even better than a moose. ha

When I forget my camera, it is all I can think about! We did that at the zoo one time, and I pouted until we bought the $1,450,999.00 disposable camera at the zoo store. Man, it was so worth it.

I at first thought you were gonna say the camera broke, to which I about broke down, because once you become famous you're sending me that one, remember??

DKG aka Scrappy Doo said...

Heartbreaking that you could'nt snap a pic. but glad you got to see them up close.

Loree said...

Oh well. Maybe next time. But I know exactly how you feel. Blogging must be making us all just a little bit insane.

Insanity Kim: LMAO..."the $1,450,999.00 disposable camera at the zoo store". haha haaaa haaaaaaaaaaa
(You must have found one on SALE). Ok, Ok. If (I mean WHEN) I get famous for my photography, you can have the damn camera!) It may be an antique by then, but ok.

Scrappy: Yes, I have tried to think that way. I have been waiting and waiting to see moose up here and felt so thrilled to see them up close. I must learn to take life's gifts as they present themselves to me.

Loree: I was insane before the blogging. ha
